It connects Microsoft’s Counterfit adversarial-attack capabilities with MITRE CALDERA’s adversary-emulation platform and uses the MITRE ATLAS framework to represent tactics and techniques relevant to machine-learning systems. Its purpose is to help security teams examine how adversarial behavior could affect an ML-enabled enterprise workflow—not to serve as a standalone AI model or a general-purpose attack product.
What Arsenal does
Arsenal is designed for authorized security testing: it lets practitioners use CALDERA to emulate adversarial attacks and behaviors involving machine-learning systems. Microsoft and MITRE described the integration as a way to investigate vulnerabilities across an end-to-end ML workflow in an enterprise network, then use what the exercise reveals to develop countermeasures and controls. The announcement presents this workflow-level approach as complementary to tools that focus on a particular ML-system vulnerability, rather than as a measured performance comparison. MITRE and Microsoft’s announcement explains the intended scope.
How the components fit together
| Component | Role in the integration |
|---|---|
| Counterfit | Microsoft’s library for implementing adversarial attacks on AI algorithms, as described by MITRE ATLAS resources. |
| CALDERA | MITRE’s platform for creating and automating adversary profiles and emulation, as described by MITRE ATLAS resources. |
| ATLAS | MITRE’s knowledge base of adversary tactics, techniques, and case studies involving machine-learning systems, as described by MITRE ATLAS resources. |
| Arsenal | The plug-in that brings these capabilities together so CALDERA can emulate behaviors using Counterfit and tactics and techniques defined by ATLAS. |
In practical terms, Counterfit contributes attack capabilities, CALDERA provides the orchestration, and ATLAS supplies a structured vocabulary for the behaviors being emulated. MITRE’s ATLAS resources describe the roles of these underlying tools and framework.
What a security team can learn from it
A focused assessment might investigate a single model or a particular ML-system weakness. Arsenal’s stated value is broader: emulating adversary behavior across an ML-enabled enterprise workflow can help a team consider how individual weaknesses interact with surrounding systems and defenses. That is the distinction in scope; the official announcement does not report comparative test results or establish that one approach is more effective than another.

MITRE described CALDERA more broadly in a February 14, 2024 update as an open-source emulation platform and said it had released plug-ins for AI/ML and operational technology. That update provides platform context, but it does not establish Arsenal’s current release, maintenance status, compatibility, or profile inventory. MITRE’s CALDERA update concerns the broader platform.
How much attack coverage does Arsenal include?
MITRE’s March 2, 2023 launch announcement said Arsenal contained a limited number of adversary profiles based on publicly available information at the time, and that additional techniques and profiles were planned as new attacks were documented. It gave no profile count. This is a dated description of launch scope, not a verified inventory of what Arsenal covers today.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
The official sources cited here do not establish Arsenal’s present version, repository maintenance, installation procedure, compatibility, or current number of profiles. CALDERA’s later AI/ML plug-in update does not by itself confirm any of those Arsenal-specific details.
