Neither cross-play nor cross-progression has been confirmed for Grand Theft Auto VI. As of October 4, 2026, Rockstar’s official game page and its pre-order announcement do not describe either feature. The announced launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but that does not establish that players on those consoles will be able to play together or share progress.
What cross-play and cross-progression mean
- Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together in the same game.
- Cross-progression lets a player carry game progress or account data between platforms.
They are separate features: a game could support one without supporting the other. Rockstar has confirmed neither for GTA 6 in the official materials reviewed.
What Rockstar has announced about GTA 6
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as launch platforms and gives a release date of November 19, 2026. Its current public copy does not mention cross-play, cross-progression, or an online mode.
In its June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement, Take-Two Interactive, issuing the announcement for Rockstar Games, described GTA VI this way: “Grand Theft Auto VI features a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” That is the announcement’s stated framing; it does not establish what online features Rockstar might announce later. The pre-order announcement likewise does not confirm cross-play or cross-progression.

Why GTA V’s migration feature does not answer the GTA 6 question
Rockstar previously described a one-time migration of existing GTA V Story Mode and GTA Online progress to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. That was a GTAV-specific offer tied to moving to the newer console generation, not a promise of permanent shared progression and not evidence that GTA VI will support cross-progression. What to consider if you are choosing a console
If playing GTA 6 with friends on another platform is important to you, do not assume cross-play will be available. Choose based on the platform you want to use for the announced release, and wait for Rockstar to explicitly confirm cross-play before relying on it. The same applies if carrying progress between platforms matters to you: no such GTA VI feature has been announced.

GTA Intel’s FAQ, updated September 12, 2026, also reports that Rockstar has not confirmed cross-play, cross-progression, or an online mode. That is secondary reporting; Rockstar’s own page and pre-order announcement are the primary sources for the current announcement status.
