The iPhone 16 Pro Max is still a strong choice if you want a very large, smooth display, dependable endurance, and versatile cameras—but in 2026 it makes the most sense as a discounted previous-generation iPhone. Its size and weight are real drawbacks, and its charging speed was disappointing in independent testing. Check the seller, condition, warranty, and current price against newer Pro Max models before buying; its launch price is not a guide to what it should cost today.

What is the iPhone 16 Pro Max like?

Apple introduced the iPhone 16 Pro Max in 2024. Apple described it at launch as having “a 6.9-inch display, the largest ever on iPhone” (Apple Newsroom). That screen is the defining feature: it gives you generous room for video, reading, games, and multitasking, but makes this a large phone to carry and handle.

The overall proposition is straightforward: a premium, big-screen iPhone with a capable triple-camera system and strong battery results in one independent test. The tradeoff is that you are buying an older generation, so its value depends on the deal rather than its original positioning.

Pros and cons at a glance

Pros Cons
Large 6.9-inch OLED display with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz Large footprint and 227g weight can make one-handed use awkward
Strong 17-hour-38-minute result in Tom’s Guide’s continuous 5G web-browsing test Tom’s Guide recorded 55% charge after 30 minutes in its charging test
48MP main and ultra-wide cameras plus a 12MP 5x optical telephoto Digital zoom results may be sharper on some competing phones
USB-C supports USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s It is a 2024 generation, so the purchase price must reflect newer alternatives

Display: excellent for a big-screen iPhone

Apple lists a 6.9-inch OLED display with a 2868 × 1320 resolution and 460 pixels per inch. ProMotion adjusts the refresh rate up to 120Hz, and the display supports Always-On and an outdoor peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits (Apple’s technical specifications).

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, 256GB, Black Titanium - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

The high refresh rate makes motion and scrolling look smoother than on a standard 60Hz display, while the large panel suits video and other content that benefits from extra screen space. That size is also the central compromise: if you prefer a compact phone or often operate your phone one-handed, the display’s benefits may not outweigh its reach and bulk.

Battery life: a strong independent test result

Tom’s Guide recorded 17 hours and 38 minutes of continuous web browsing over 5G at 150 nits in its 2024 battery test (Tom’s Guide review, October 1, 2024). This is a controlled test result, not a promise of how long every owner’s phone will last. Real-world endurance varies with factors such as signal strength, brightness, apps, and usage.

Apple separately estimates up to 33 hours of video playback (Apple specifications). That is a manufacturer estimate for a different activity and should not be compared directly with Tom’s Guide’s continuous web-browsing result.

Cameras: flexible lenses, with limits at high digital zoom

The rear system combines a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom in. Apple also lists 2x optical zoom out (Apple specifications). Tom’s Guide praised the camera quality and found the upgraded ultra-wide useful, while noting that some competitors produced sharper images at higher digital zoom levels (Tom’s Guide review).

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, 256GB, Desert Titanium - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
  • Titanium frame and reinforced edges provide a premium, durable build, reducing weight compared to stainless steel while enhancing grip and making the phone easier to handle during long sessions of video recording, gaming, or editing.
  • Camera system designed for versatility and precision, including ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses with improved low-light and macro capabilities, giving photographers and creators a broader range of expressive tools while maintaining sharp details across the frame.
  • Advanced Action button offers customizable shortcuts, allowing quick access to features like capturing photos, launching apps, controlling accessibility tools, or activating automation tasks without interrupting your workflow.
  • Audio and video performance optimized for creators, with spatial audio, improved microphones, and stabilized video recording, providing professional-quality sound and smooth footage whether recording content, streaming, or joining video calls.

For video, Tom’s Guide’s specifications comparison lists 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 120 frames per second. The reviewer also noted useful slow-motion editing options. Those capabilities make the phone versatile for people who shoot video as well as still photos, but they do not change the practical tradeoff: the phone’s dimensions may be less convenient to hold and frame with for extended shooting.

Size and handling: the main reason not to buy it

Apple lists the iPhone 16 Pro Max at 227 grams (Apple specifications). Tom’s Guide found its height and width made one-handed use a stretch for some people and observed that a case adds bulk (Tom’s Guide review). Those are reviewer judgments, not a universal fit test; if possible, handle the phone with the sort of case you intend to use before deciding.

Charging and connectivity

In Tom’s Guide’s 2024 charging test, the phone reached 55% after 30 minutes, which the reviewer considered disappointing compared with some competing phones (Tom’s Guide review). Apple’s own fast-charge description is a separate measure: it says the phone can reach around 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher power adapter and USB-C cable, or a 30W-or-higher adapter with MagSafe. Apple also lists MagSafe charging up to 25W with a 30W-or-higher adapter (Apple specifications). These manufacturer conditions and independent test results are not interchangeable guarantees.

The USB-C port supports USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gb/s, useful if you regularly move large files over a wired connection (Apple specifications). Apple says the accessories required for its specified fast-charge setup are sold separately.

Is the iPhone 16 Pro Max worth buying in 2026?

It can be, if you specifically want a large iPhone and find a meaningful discount from a reputable seller. TechRadar’s maintained buying guide says it remains an exceptional handset at a third-party discount, while describing newer-generation improvements in chipset, design, telephoto, and selfie cameras (TechRadar buying guide). That broad assessment does not establish today’s exact price or stock.

Tom’s Guide listed a US launch price of $1,199 for the 256GB model in 2024 (Tom’s Guide review). Treat that as historical launch pricing, not a current quote or a fair-value target. Before purchasing, compare the actual price and storage with current alternatives, and verify the device’s condition, carrier lock, warranty, and return policy.

Choose the 16 Pro Max if

  • You want the larger 6.9-inch screen and are comfortable with a 227g phone.
  • You value the 5x optical telephoto and large-screen video experience.
  • You find a price that makes sense relative to newer models and the device’s verified condition.

Consider a different model if

  • One-handed use, pocketability, or lower weight matters more than screen size.
  • You want the newest generation’s improvements rather than a discount on older hardware.
  • The price gap to a newer alternative is too small to justify choosing the 16 Pro Max.

Verdict

The iPhone 16 Pro Max remains compelling for people who want an expansive high-refresh-rate display, flexible cameras, and strong tested endurance. Its bulk, merely adequate charging result in Tom’s Guide’s test, and superseded status make it a conditional recommendation in 2026: buy it for the large-screen experience at a verified discount, not at a price that ignores newer options.
