Apple Home Key is a digital key in Apple Wallet that lets an iPhone or Apple Watch unlock a compatible smart lock. Pair a supported lock in Apple’s Home app and the key is automatically added to Wallet on iPhone. With Express Mode enabled, bring the device near the lock to unlock it without Face ID or Touch ID.
What is Apple Home Key?
Home Key is a Wallet credential for a specific compatible smart lock. It is not another name for Apple Home, a smart lock, or every accessory that works with the Home app. Apple adds the key to Wallet when you pair a supported lock in the Home app.
Apple describes the feature in its iPhone and Apple Watch Home Key guide. The key is used at the door; the Home app is where you pair the lock, manage settings and share access.
How does Apple Home Key work?
During setup, you add a supported lock in the Home app and choose how unlocking should work. If you select Express Mode, hold your iPhone near the lock or bring your Apple Watch near it. If you do not use Express Mode, you authenticate with Face ID or a passcode after bringing the device near the lock.

Express Mode removes an authentication step at the door, which is more convenient but means unlocking does not require Face ID or Touch ID. Apple’s Apple Wallet access-security documentation describes protections for access keys; it should not be read as a guarantee that every physical lock or manufacturer implementation is invulnerable.
Do all Apple Home or Matter locks support Home Key?
No. A lock may work with Apple Home or Matter and still lack Home Key. Apple explicitly warns: “Not all Home app-compatible locks support home key.” Check the exact model and generation in the manufacturer’s documentation before buying; a general “smart lock,” “Apple Home,” or “Matter” label is not enough.

Household access, guest codes and Home settings
Residents can receive a Home Key when a supported lock is added to the home. In the Home app, you can share access and set up automations, such as locking the door after it closes or when you leave home. Some locks also support guest access codes. Apple notes that a lock may offer a Home Key, an access code, or both; those options vary by lock.

What to check before choosing a Home Key lock
- Exact model and generation: Verify Home Key support in the manufacturer’s documentation, rather than inferring it from Home or Matter compatibility.
- Your devices and software: Confirm the lock’s stated iPhone, Apple Watch, iOS and watchOS requirements.
- Door fit: Compare the lock’s installation requirements with your existing deadbolt and door. For example, Aqara identifies the U400 as compatible with single-cylinder deadbolts.
- Access methods: Check whether the particular lock supports Home Key, access codes or both, and which authentication option you prefer at the door.
