It can help reveal edits such as a crop, color change, or generative-AI adjustment. It does not prove that the photographed scene was genuine or that every AI-generated image can be detected.
What Apple Reference Image does
When you capture in Reference mode, the Main camera sensor signs the captured pixel data and sensor-produced metadata. Apple says other relevant values produced outside the sensor are signed by the Secure Enclave Processor. The system creates a secure digital negative with lower and upper cryptographic timestamp bounds; it can later be developed into a viewable reference image using Private Cloud Compute (PCC). Apple Support and Apple Security Research describe the design.
The developed reference is minimally processed, so it can look less contrasty and less saturated than the ordinary photo. Switching between the two can make visible differences—such as a crop, color change, or generative edit—easier to spot. Apple Security Research calls its system “a trustworthy, scalable guarantee that a reference image is what it claims to be: a real photograph, captured by a real sensor in an iPhone camera, at a specific time.” That is Apple’s description of its guarantee, not an independent finding.
Reference Image is a provenance tool, not a truth detector. It can support the claim that data came from a supported iPhone camera sensor at a bounded time, but it cannot establish that a scene was not staged, selectively framed, or otherwise misleading. It also does not certify photos that were not captured in Reference mode.

How to set up, capture, and compare
- Enable the mode: On a supported iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Reference Image, choose Add Reference Mode, and complete setup. It is off by default.
- Capture: Open Camera, select Reference mode, and take the photo. The phone saves an ordinary photo along with signed Main camera sensor data.
- Develop the reference: In Photos, open the image and tap its Reference badge. Development authenticates and processes reference data and metadata through PCC, so an internet connection is required.
- Compare: Switch between the developed reference and ordinary photo to inspect visible changes. Use the Info control to view reference metadata.
- Choose what to share: Decide whether to include reference data for an individual share, or adjust the persistent Share Reference Image and Transfer Reference Image controls.
Capture and viewing compatibility

Capture eligibility is narrower than viewing eligibility: a compatible iPad or Mac can view a shared reference, but it cannot create one. Apple says capture mode is unavailable in the EU. In mainland China, users cannot capture or develop references, though they can view ones shared with them. Availability may also vary in other countries and regions. Apple Support’s availability and feature details provide the applicable regional qualifications.
Camera features, storage, and sharing trade-offs
Reference mode supports Live Photos, Portraits, and Photographic Styles, but some features—including Night Mode—are unavailable. Reference data also takes additional storage. Apple’s published estimates are:

These are Apple specifications, not independent measurements. If you only need provenance for selected images, enabling Reference mode for those captures limits the extra data and processing to that use. Using it routinely is more convenient when you regularly need a reference, but it means more storage use and more captures that may later be developed through an internet-connected workflow.
Take care when sharing an undeveloped image. Apple warns that it may include sensitive device information, such as a serial number, as well as the full image frame even if you used zoom. Including All Photos Data can therefore expose unique hardware identifiers and uncropped footage. Review the share options before sending a file, especially when the original framing or device identity should remain private.

What happens to data during development
Capture and development are separate steps. Capture creates signed data on the supported phone; authenticating and developing the viewable reference requires network processing. Apple says raw photos and metadata may be sent to PCC for authentication. It also says information about the sensor—including unique hardware identifiers—and photo metadata may be sent from PCC to Apple for fraud prevention and authentication. Apple states that it cannot access the raw photo during authentication and that privacy-preserving measures prevent it from learning which authenticated photos a user views. Apple’s privacy policy describes these data flows and notes that some business records may be retained after the feature is disabled.
Apple presents semantic authenticity, resilience to compromise, and privacy preservation as design goals. It says secure hardware protects capture, PCC runs inspectable processing, and images or sensors can be revoked if fraud is detected. It also says public viewers cannot determine whether two reference images came from the same sensor. These are Apple’s technical and privacy claims; they have not been independently tested here.
