The Google Pixel 8 is a good fit if you want a relatively compact Android phone with a smooth, bright display, a capable camera and a long software-support commitment. Its main trade-offs are limited zoom, performance that does not match the fastest phones, and battery life that depends on how you use it. In 2026, whether it is worth buying comes down to its current price, condition and remaining update period—not its launch price or original seven-year promise alone.

Google Pixel 8 pros and cons at a glance

Pros Cons
Compact 6.2-inch size compared with many larger flagship phones No dedicated telephoto camera or extended optical zoom
Bright OLED display with a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate Raw performance trails the fastest competing phones
Strong main camera, ultrawide camera with Macro Focus, and approachable photo tools Some advanced camera controls and Night Sight video are Pixel 8 Pro features
Google announced seven years of OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops from first US Google Store availability Battery estimates depend on test conditions, and real-world endurance varies

What are the Pixel 8’s biggest advantages?

A more manageable size

Google specifies a 6.2-inch display, measured diagonally as a rectangle. Reviewers found the base Pixel 8 more compact and easier to handle than larger flagship phones. That makes it a sensible choice if you want a capable phone without moving up to a larger model, though the actual feel also depends on your hands and whether you use a case. Google’s Pixel hardware specifications list the display size; The Guardian’s 2023 review and Android Central’s 2023 review assess the phone’s size and handling.

A bright, smooth screen

The Pixel 8 has an OLED Actua display. Android Central reported a 120 Hz refresh rate and a brightness increase over the Pixel 7, while The Guardian praised the screen. A high refresh rate makes scrolling and motion appear smoother than on a conventional 60 Hz display; it is a display benefit, not evidence that demanding games will run at the same high frame rate.

A strong everyday camera

The rear camera system pairs an updated main camera with an ultrawide camera that supports Macro Focus. The Guardian and Android Central reviewed the camera favorably, making it one of the Pixel 8’s strongest everyday reasons to buy. Macro Focus is useful for close-up subjects; the ultrawide camera also gives you a wider framing option than the main camera.

Long-term software support

Google announced seven years of Android OS upgrades, security updates and regular Feature Drops for the Pixel 8. The clock is counted from the phone’s first availability on the US Google Store, not from the day an individual buys it. Because the phone launched in 2023, someone shopping in 2026 should check how much of that period remains rather than assume they will receive seven fresh years. Google’s October 2023 announcement describes the commitment and its starting point.

What are the Pixel 8’s drawbacks?

Limited camera reach

The base Pixel 8 does not have a dedicated telephoto camera or the extended optical zoom available on the Pixel 8 Pro. You can use digital zoom, but it is not the same as having a telephoto lens. If you often photograph distant subjects—such as performers, sports or wildlife—the Pro’s extra reach is a meaningful distinction. The Guardian also identified zoom reach as a drawback of the base model.

  • Google Pixel 7 has wide and ultrawide lenses with up to 8x Super Res Zoom[5]; and Cinematic Blur brings more drama to your videos

Some camera features are Pro-only

In this generation, Pro Controls and Night Sight video were reserved for the Pixel 8 Pro. The standard Pixel 8 still offers capable automatic photography, but it is not the right pick if manual camera parameters or those Pro-specific video tools are central to your decision. Feature availability can vary by country or carrier; consult Google’s specifications and feature information for the relevant market.

Not the fastest phone for heavy workloads

The Guardian found the Pixel 8’s raw performance behind the fastest competing phones. That matters more if you play demanding games, run sustained workloads or prioritize peak processing speed. For everyday use, the more practical question is whether the specific apps and games you rely on perform well for you; the review evidence does not establish a universal result for every workload.

Google Pixel 8 - Unlocked Android Smartphone with Advanced Pixel Camera, 24-Hour Battery, and Powerful Security - Obsidian - 128 GB
  • Pixel 8 is the helpful phone engineered by Google; the new Google Tensor G3 chip is custom-designed with Google AI for cutting-edge photo and video features and smarter ways to help[1]
  • Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Google Pixel 8 has a fully upgraded camera with advanced image processing to reveal vivid colors and striking details; and now with Macro Focus, even the smallest subjects can become spectacular images
  • The 6.2-inch Pixel 8 Actua display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[3,4]
  • Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[5]; and it charges faster than ever[6]

Battery life is not captured by the headline maximum

Google’s “up to 72 hours” battery estimate depends on Extreme Battery Saver. Google says that mode disables features including 5G, and that actual battery life can be lower. Treat it as a manufacturer estimate under a special battery-saving mode, not a typical-use promise. The Guardian described battery life as decent, but your results will depend on factors such as signal, screen use, apps and settings.

What should you know about charging?

Google specifies wired charging up to 27 W when using its 30 W USB-C charger, which is sold separately. “Up to” is a maximum specification, not a guarantee that every charging session will reach that rate; actual results may be slower. Google’s hardware page lists the charging qualification and charger requirement.

Is the Pixel 8 worth buying in 2026?

There is no useful universal answer without the seller’s current price and the phone’s condition. Google announced a US starting price of $699 at launch in October 2023; that is historical pricing, not a current-value benchmark. Review the following before buying:

  • Price and condition: Compare the asking price with current alternatives, and check whether the phone is new, refurbished or used. Inspect the seller’s return terms and the device’s condition.
  • Remaining support: Confirm how much time remains in Google’s announced support period, which is counted from first US Google Store availability.
  • Camera needs: The Pixel 8’s main and ultrawide cameras suit general photography, but its lack of a telephoto camera is a drawback for distant subjects.
  • Performance demands: Consider a faster alternative if demanding games or sustained processing are priorities.
  • Network compatibility: Confirm that the exact model supports your carrier and region. Google notes that cellular bands and service depend on carrier and location.
  • Storage: Check the storage capacity offered by the specific listing; the best deal depends on the configuration as well as the price.

The Pixel 8 makes the most sense when its price reflects its age and remaining support, and when its compact size and camera matter more to you than optical zoom or top-tier performance. The original $699 US launch price should not be used as evidence of what it is worth today.
