If your Microsoft account passkey is not working, start with the exact error and check where the passkey is stored. A passkey can still exist but be unavailable to the device, browser, or work profile handling the sign-in. Before deleting anything, use another sign-in method if available and set up a working replacement.
Start with the exact error message
Microsoft’s passkey troubleshooting guide groups failures by message and situation. Use the branch that matches your screen instead of resetting unrelated credentials.
- “Something went wrong” or “No passkeys available”: Check that the device has a screen lock, then confirm the passkey is saved in the provider or profile currently being used.
- “This passkey can no longer be used” or an invalid-passkey message: The passkey may have been deleted, or the account’s authentication method may have changed. Sign in using another offered method and create a replacement.
- QR code missing or phone-to-computer sign-in failing: Check Bluetooth on both devices, their proximity, and internet access.
- “External security key not found”: Reconnect the USB or NFC key and respond to the security-key prompt promptly.
- Android work-account sign-in failing: Check whether the passkey was saved in the personal profile rather than the work profile.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting page also covers QR-code errors and other specific messages; follow its matching instructions when your wording differs from these examples.
Check the device lock and passkey location
A device needs a face, fingerprint, or PIN screen lock to use its passkeys, according to Microsoft. Set up or enable the lock, then try signing in again.

Next, identify where the passkey was created. It might be device-bound, saved in Windows, held by a synced credential manager, or associated with another device. Check the provider that created it and Microsoft’s saved-passkey management guidance. A passkey available on one device or profile may not be available to the sign-in flow on another.
Fix phone-to-computer QR sign-in
When a phone is being used to approve sign-in on a computer, Bluetooth must be on for both devices. Keep them close together and make sure each has internet access. They do not need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If the QR code does not appear, Microsoft recommends checking Bluetooth first.

An employer or school may restrict cross-device Bluetooth sign-in through account policy. If the option is unavailable on a managed account, check with the organization’s administrator rather than repeatedly resetting the passkey.
Confirm operating system, browser, and provider support
Microsoft publishes these minimum requirements for passkeys. The support page does not state a publication year; the figures below were reviewed on October 4, 2026. Meeting a minimum does not guarantee every provider and configuration will work.

These requirements are listed in Microsoft’s passkey overview. Update the relevant operating system or browser if it is below the listed minimum, and confirm that you are using the same passkey provider in which the credential was saved.
Recreate an Android work-account passkey in the work profile
A passkey saved in Android’s personal profile may not be available when a work profile is handling sign-in. If the account belongs to your organization and the passkey is in the wrong profile, create it again in the work profile. To save it there, do not scan the work sign-in QR code using the personal-profile camera. Microsoft’s passkey creation instructions also note that organizational policy can affect available options.

Replace an invalid passkey without losing access
- Use another sign-in method offered on the Microsoft sign-in screen, if one is available.
- Create a new passkey in a supported location and profile using Microsoft’s creation instructions.
- Test the new passkey before removing the old entry.
- After confirming the replacement works, remove entries that no longer apply using Microsoft’s saved-passkey management steps.
Deleting a passkey can remove that sign-in route. Microsoft also warns that removing all security information can put an account into a restricted state for 30 days: during that period, security and billing changes cannot be accepted, though the account remains open and usable for email, OneDrive, and devices.

For a FIDO2 security key, reconnect it and follow the key maker’s instructions, including any prompt to touch or activate the key. Complete the prompt promptly. Microsoft documents USB and NFC keys as personal-account sign-in options in its guide to signing in with a security key. Check that the key’s connection type works with the device you are using. A physical key is an optional sign-in method, not a fix for browser, profile, sync, or account-policy problems.

Choose a suitable place for a replacement passkey
Microsoft distinguishes between synced passkeys and device-bound passkeys. A synced passkey can be available across devices through its provider; a device-bound passkey is limited to the device where it was created. When choosing where to save a replacement, consider:
- Availability: Whether you need the passkey on more than one device and whether the provider supports those devices.
- Recovery: Whether you have another working sign-in method if the device holding a device-bound passkey is lost.
- Organization control: Whether your employer or school controls the account or restricts passkey options.
- Compatibility: Whether the device, browser, and selected provider meet Microsoft’s published requirements.
If you still cannot sign in
If no offered sign-in method works, use Microsoft’s passkey troubleshooting guidance and its account sign-in helper. Microsoft Support says its agents cannot send password-reset links or change account details, so use the account recovery and sign-in routes Microsoft provides rather than expecting an agent to bypass them.
