If you see only one check, Google Messages has not received a delivery indication yet. That does not reveal the exact cause or prove whether the recipient has seen the message. The checkmark indicators apply to RCS, not SMS or MMS.
What “sent” but not “delivered” means
RCS messages use Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google says delivery may be delayed if you or your contact loses mobile or internet service. RCS availability also depends on the participants’ devices, carriers, regions, and settings. A pending delivery status is not enough to conclude that the recipient is offline, has blocked you, or that a service is down.
First check whether the conversation is using RCS or SMS/MMS. The RCS checkmark key does not appear for SMS or MMS, so the absence of those icons on a standard text message does not mean it failed.
Choose whether to wait or send the message as SMS/MMS
If you need to retry an undelivered RCS message through standard texting, Google provides a per-message switch. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted, unlike encrypted RCS conversations, so consider that tradeoff before switching.

- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap the timestamp for the undelivered message.
- Select Switch to text (SMS/MMS).
This is a manual option for that message; do not assume Google Messages will automatically fall back. Keeping Wi-Fi or mobile data available helps RCS send and receive promptly.
| Option | How it works | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Keep waiting for RCS | Uses Wi-Fi or mobile data and can show sent, delivered, and read indicators. | Delivery can be delayed by a loss of service; availability varies by device, carrier, region, and settings. |
| Switch this message to SMS/MMS | Use the message timestamp menu and choose Switch to text (SMS/MMS). | Not end-to-end encrypted and does not use the same RCS status icons. |
Check your phone, account, and contact details
If messages remain stuck, check the straightforward causes before changing RCS settings. Google recommends confirming that Google Messages is updated and is your default SMS app, the SIM is seated properly, airplane mode is off, and the phone has signal. Also confirm your mobile plan or credit supports texting and your carrier supports the relevant service. Menu names may differ across Android devices.

If the problem affects only one person, check that the saved number and country code are correct and that the contact is not blocked. These checks can uncover a local setup issue, but they cannot reveal the recipient’s actual device or carrier status.
Resolve an RCS connection or number-verification problem
RCS can show a connection or verification status separate from an individual message’s delivery state. If “Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry…” remains for more than 30 minutes, Google says Messages is having trouble verifying your phone number. Follow the Verify your number flow if it appears, and make sure your phone can receive SMS verification messages. If Google’s listed steps do not resolve it, use the feedback option in Messages.

Reset RCS only if the simpler checks do not help
For problems receiving messages or syncing RCS chats, Google suggests turning RCS off and then back on in Messages settings. Treat this as a later troubleshooting step rather than the same thing as switching one message to SMS/MMS: disabling RCS affects the service more broadly. If you deactivate RCS and do not turn it back on within 30 days, Google says you will be removed from RCS group chats.

If the phone has signal, texting is enabled on your account, and the basic checks do not fix a recurring problem, ask your carrier whether it supports the service and whether there is an account or network issue. Google’s general guidance does not establish the cause of a particular recipient’s missing delivery indication or confirm an active outage.
