Microsoft began removing Windows PowerShell 2.0 from Windows 11 version 24H2 in August 2025, after first removing it from Canary preview builds in July. Most people will not notice. The main compatibility risk is older scripts, scheduled tasks, installers, or third-party tools that explicitly require PowerShell version 2.
What Microsoft removed—and when
PowerShell 2.0 is an older Windows scripting engine, not the PowerShell command-line application as a whole. Microsoft says it was introduced with Windows 7 and officially deprecated in 2017. The phrase “after 16 years” is a rounded description of the time from its Windows 7-era introduction to its 2025 removal, not a precise duration Microsoft publishes.

Who may be affected
For most users and organizations, the change should be invisible. Microsoft says most scripts should continue to work because PowerShell 5.1 is backward-compatible with almost all commands and modules. The concern is a smaller set of older software that explicitly asks for the 2.0 engine or checks for it during installation. A script might still have behavior differences if it relies on quirks specific to version 2.

Check for explicit version-2 launches
Search scripts, scheduled-task actions, installer instructions, and application configuration for a command such as powershell.exe -Version 2. Microsoft says that when the 2.0 engine is absent, this legacy launch request cannot start that engine; the system instead launches the default PowerShell version, PowerShell 5.1. That change may expose assumptions in tools designed specifically for the older engine.
If an installer reports that PowerShell 2.0 is missing, treat that as a software compatibility issue rather than proof that PowerShell itself is gone. Check with the software vendor for a current release that no longer depends on version 2.

How to migrate scripts or tools
Microsoft’s primary guidance is to update anything using PowerShell 2.0 to PowerShell 5.1 or PowerShell 7. The two are distinct versions, so neither should be assumed to behave identically for every legacy script or module. Choose based on the environment and dependencies, then test the actual workload.
- Find the dependency. Search for
-Version 2, installer checks for PowerShell 2.0, and scheduled tasks or vendor tools that invoke the old engine. - Remove the forced version where possible. Update commands or launch configuration so the script uses the supported PowerShell version available on the target system, rather than explicitly requesting version 2.
- Test under the intended target. Run the script and its required modules in a test environment using PowerShell 5.1 or PowerShell 7. Check outputs and side effects, especially where the script depends on older modules or version-specific behavior.
- Update or replace dependent software. Install a vendor-supported version that no longer requires PowerShell 2.0; consult the vendor if compatibility is unclear.

What if something still requires PowerShell 2.0?
First look for an updated script or supported version of the dependent application. Microsoft describes a temporary workaround using its ps2DLC.zip package, but calls it a last resort and says to migrate away as soon as possible. It is not a restoration of normal built-in Windows support.
- Download
ps2DLC.zipfrom Microsoft’s PowerShell 2.0 removal guidance and extract it. - Open an elevated PowerShell window in the extracted folder.
- Run
run .loadGAC.ps1, as Microsoft instructs.
Use this only when a necessary dependency has no suitable update or replacement; plan to remove the dependency rather than relying on the workaround as a long-term fix.
