Apple has not announced a formal return to its design roots. What is clear is that John Ternus became CEO on September 1, 2026, after Apple described his record in hardware engineering, materials, durability, and repairability. Separately, 2026 reporting said he planned to give Apple’s Industrial Design group a stronger role. That reported plan could signal a shift in how Apple develops products, but it is not confirmation that a reorganization has happened—or that future products will be more ambitious.
What has Apple actually announced?
Apple’s official announcements establish two relevant facts: its recent software-design direction and its leadership transition. They do not describe an official “return to design roots” program.
John Ternus became CEO on September 1, 2026
In an April 20, 2026 announcement, Apple said Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus would become CEO on September 1. The announcement identified Ternus as Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering and highlighted his mechanical-engineering background.
Apple credited Ternus with work on reliability and durability, materials and hardware design, recycled aluminum, 3-D-printed titanium in Apple Watch Ultra 3, and repairability improvements. This is Apple’s account of his contributions; it documents an engineering and product-development record, not a previous leadership role in industrial design.

Liquid Glass is Apple’s stated software-design direction
At its June 9, 2025 announcement, Apple introduced Liquid Glass, a translucent software-design material, for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. Apple said the design was inspired by visionOS and developed through collaboration between design and engineering. Its stated aim was to bring greater focus to content while retaining familiarity.
Apple’s description tells readers what the company intended; it is not independent evidence that users judged the redesign successful. Liquid Glass also concerns software interfaces, so it should not be treated as proof of a change in the design of Apple’s physical products.

What is reported about Ternus and the design organization?
A June 2026 Macworld article summarized Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s reporting that Ternus anticipated a major design shake-up, had spent substantial time with Apple’s Industrial Design group, and wanted to give the team a stronger role. Macworld also relayed internal remarks attributed to employee meetings, including the phrase “design is core to what we do.” Those remarks are reported secondhand, not a public Apple announcement.
The reporting points to a possible change in organizational influence or process. It does not establish that a reorganization has been completed, specify what authority or structure might change, or show what products will result. Fortune’s July 2026 profile framed the broader question as whether Ternus can restore product-design ambition and move Apple beyond iteration; the analysts and former Apple staff quoted there offer perspectives, not proof of a future outcome.

How to judge whether Apple is changing direction
“Going back to its design roots” is an interpretation, not a measurable Apple initiative. It can mean different things, and the available evidence should be separated accordingly.
| Question | What the evidence establishes | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| Has Apple announced a new design strategy? | Apple announced Liquid Glass in 2025 as a software-design direction across five named operating systems. | No official announcement in the cited material calls it a return to design roots or sets out a new industrial-design strategy. |
| Has the design team gained a stronger organizational role? | Macworld summarized Bloomberg reporting that Ternus wanted to give the Industrial Design group a stronger role. | The cited reporting does not confirm a completed reorganization or define its practical effects. |
| Does Ternus have a record relevant to product design? | Apple credits him with hardware-engineering work involving materials, durability, reliability, and repairability. | That record alone does not establish how much influence industrial designers will have under his leadership. |
| Will Apple make more distinctive products? | Fortune presents this as a question and includes outside perspectives on product ambition. | The cited material offers no design-specific score or demonstrated future product results. |
Apple’s scale is not a proxy for design quality. Its April 2026 announcement cited more than $416 billion in fiscal-year 2025 revenue and more than 2.5 billion active devices in its installed base; neither figure measures whether its design choices are distinctive or successful.

Who is leading Apple’s design push?
Ternus is the CEO and the senior executive whose reported intentions have prompted questions about the design organization. Apple’s announcement describes his engineering background and contributions, while the claims about a stronger Industrial Design role come from reporting. The evidence therefore supports calling him the leader associated with a possible organizational push—not saying Apple has confirmed a new design program or that he personally leads every design discipline.
Apple’s 2025 software announcement quoted Alan Dye, then vice president of Human Interface Design, calling Liquid Glass “our broadest software design update ever.” That is a statement about the scope of a software update, not a measure of industrial-design ambition or evidence that the company’s internal structure has changed.

What to watch for next
- Organizational changes: Look for specific, public confirmation of changes to the Industrial Design group’s role, leadership, or place in product decisions rather than relying only on reported intentions.
- Products, not slogans: Judge any claimed return to design roots by announced and delivered hardware and software, not by an executive transition or a broad description of intent.
- Separate software and hardware: Liquid Glass is a concrete software direction; whether physical products show a different design process or level of ambition is a separate question.
- Distinguish continuity from change: Ternus’s engineering record can support continuity in materials and product execution. Evidence of a meaningful process shift would require specifics about design’s influence and the resulting products.
