No: Windows 10 support has not been extended to 2028. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, but says Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will continue receiving security updates until October 10, 2028. That is a limited app-security extension—not continued Windows support or a promise of new Office features and technical help.

What Microsoft is extending—and what it is not

“Support” covers separate things here: Windows operating-system updates and assistance, Microsoft 365 app security updates, Microsoft 365 features and other support, and the lifecycle of one-time-purchase Office editions. The 2028 date applies only to security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps running on Windows 10.

What you use What Microsoft says Key date
Windows 10 Support ended; ordinary Windows security updates and support no longer apply. October 14, 2025
Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 Security updates continue, but new features and other support do not. Microsoft warns that performance and reliability issues may arise over time. Security updates through October 10, 2028
Office 2021 on Windows 10 It may continue to run, but is no longer supported on Windows 10. Office 2021 has its own lifecycle. Office 2021 support ends October 13, 2026
Office LTSC 2024 on Windows 10 It may continue to run, but is no longer supported on Windows 10. Its lifecycle date does not extend Windows support. Office LTSC 2024 support ends October 9, 2029

Microsoft’s [Office and Microsoft 365 end-of-support guidance] describes the Microsoft 365 extension as three years after Windows 10 end of support. That interval is not full Microsoft 365 support on Windows 10.

What happens if you keep using Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10?

The apps may keep working, and Microsoft will provide security updates for them through October 10, 2028. But Microsoft says new features and other support will not be provided during that period. It recommends moving to a supported Windows operating system, warning that continued use on Windows 10 may lead to performance and reliability problems over time.

Those app updates do not restore regular Windows 10 security updates. The operating system remains out of support, so keeping Microsoft 365 current does not make the Windows configuration supported or secure in the same way as a supported Windows release.

How Office 2021 and Office 2024 differ from Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 Apps are subscription apps; Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2024 are separate perpetual-license editions with their own product lifecycles. Do not apply the Microsoft 365-on-Windows-10 security-update extension to those editions: Microsoft says Office 2021 and Office 2024 may continue to run on Windows 10, but they are no longer supported on that out-of-support operating system.

Neither Office lifecycle date changes Windows 10’s October 14, 2025 end-of-support date.

Which path makes sense for your PC?

Base the decision on your Office edition and your PC’s Windows 11 eligibility—not just on the 2028 date.

  • Your PC can run Windows 11: Moving to a supported Windows configuration is Microsoft’s recommendation. Check your device’s eligibility and plan the upgrade before relying on an operating system that no longer receives ordinary support.
  • Your PC cannot run Windows 11, or you choose not to upgrade yet: Microsoft identifies Office on the web as an alternative for people not ready to upgrade. Consider whether a browser-based workflow meets your needs while you decide what to do with the device.
  • You are considering a replacement: A Windows 11 PC may be appropriate if your hardware is incompatible or replacement otherwise suits your circumstances. Microsoft’s guidance does not say that every Windows 10 user must buy a new computer.
  • You have Office 2021 or Office LTSC 2024: Check that edition’s lifecycle separately. The Microsoft 365 Apps security-update date is not an extension for perpetual Office.

How to read the “not allowed to complain” headline

There is no special rule forbidding complaints. The important distinction is that Microsoft is offering a limited security-update window for Microsoft 365 Apps while Windows users move to a supported operating system; it is not promising full app support on Windows 10 through 2028. If an app issue arises, the fact that security updates continue does not mean new features or other support are included.
