The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the right choice if you want Apple’s largest Pro display, value the added camera control of variable aperture, and are comfortable carrying a large phone. Its 6.9-inch screen is a meaningful step up from the iPhone 18 Pro’s 6.3-inch display, while battery life is promising but should be judged by the test behind each figure: Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback, and one TechRadar reviewer reported around 30 hours of use on average during their review.
What’s new in the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Apple’s launch schedule set preorders for September 12, initial availability for September 18, and availability in 20 additional countries and regions from September 25. Those were launch dates, not a guarantee of current stock in any particular market. Apple’s announcement describes the main changes: the A20 Pro chip, a next-generation vapor chamber, a redesigned Dynamic Island and a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.
The camera aperture is the clearest new control for photography. Apple says it adjusts to lighting and depth of field. That can give photographers another way to manage capture, but the specification alone does not establish how much better a photo will look in a particular scene. Apple’s performance statements are also manufacturer claims; the available review coverage does not provide an independent sustained-load comparison of the A20 Pro against competing phones.
The exterior is less of a redesign. TechRadar’s reviewer describes the aluminum body and camera plateau as carrying over the prior generation’s design. The new model is therefore more about internal changes and camera flexibility than a dramatic change in appearance.

Display and size: the Max is a large-phone choice
Apple lists a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display for the Pro Max and a 6.3-inch display for the iPhone 18 Pro; both support ProMotion up to 120Hz. That 0.6-inch difference is substantial in daily handling. The Max makes more room for video, reading and on-screen work, but is the less appealing option if one-handed use or a smaller pocketable phone matters more. Apple lists black, silver, glacier and burgundy finishes. Check your local store for current color availability.
Both phones share the headline Pro features, so size should be a deliberate choice rather than an assumed upgrade. Pick the Pro Max for the larger viewing area and its battery positioning; choose the 18 Pro if you want the Pro experience in a smaller form. iPhone 18 Pro Max battery life: what the numbers mean
Apple advertises up to 45 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. This is Apple’s playback figure, not a promise of 45 hours of mixed everyday use. Apple says its battery testing used preproduction units and a representative usage profile, and notes that actual results vary with use and settings. The launch announcement describes the Max as delivering the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone, which is also a manufacturer claim.
Separately, TechRadar’s reviewer reported averaging around 30 hours of use before charging during the review period, with the Max lasting somewhat longer than the smaller Pro. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a standardized test or a forecast for every owner. The two figures use different contexts and should not be compared as if they measured the same thing.

TechRadar reported these launch-era starting prices and capacities. They are publication figures, not a live quote; check Apple or a local retailer for current prices, taxes, offers and stock before buying.

TechRadar says the starting price is $100, £100 or AU$100 above the prior generation’s launch price in those respective markets. Capacity affects the total you pay; the report does not give prices for the higher storage tiers. If you routinely record high-resolution video or keep a large offline photo and media library, compare the actual local price of each capacity before choosing. Don’t pay for storage you are unlikely to use.

Should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
It makes sense if you want the biggest iPhone Pro
- You prefer a 6.9-inch display for watching, reading or working on a phone, and accept the handling trade-off of a larger device.
- You want the Max’s long-battery positioning and understand that real results depend on your usage and settings.
- You will use the variable-aperture camera control and are comfortable paying for a premium phone without assuming the feature guarantees better photos in every situation.
Consider the iPhone 18 Pro or keeping your current phone
The smaller iPhone 18 Pro offers the same listed 120Hz display technology in a 6.3-inch format. If size is your main concern, that is the more direct comparison. If you already own a recent Pro model, decide based on a practical need—such as wanting the larger screen, needing more battery headroom, or expecting to use the camera’s added control—rather than the A20 Pro label or Apple’s headline battery claim alone.
TechRadar’s reviewer considers the generational change more substantial for someone with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or an older model, while noting that the individual additions do not each reinvent the experience. That is a review judgment, not a rule for every owner. Assess your own battery satisfaction, camera habits and preferred phone size before upgrading.

Apple Support lists an IP68 rating under IEC 60529 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. That is a laboratory rating, not a reason to deliberately submerge the phone; follow Apple’s care guidance if it gets wet. Apple’s support page also describes Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features.
