The four useful types of marketing software for account-based marketing (ABM) are CRM-native account management and marketing automation, dedicated ABM platforms, intent and account intelligence tools, and account-based advertising and activation tools. They are an explanatory framework, not a fixed industry taxonomy: products often combine several types of capabilities.

ABM itself is a B2B strategy, not a software feature. It coordinates sales, marketing and sometimes service around selected high-value accounts and the people who influence buying within them. Software can help teams execute that strategy, but buying a platform does not create alignment or a sound account plan. Salesforce describes ABM as complementing broad-based marketing rather than replacing it (Salesforce’s ABM guide).

1. CRM-native account management and marketing automation

This type makes sense when your team already manages customer and prospect data in a CRM and wants to coordinate marketing and sales activity without starting with a separate ABM platform. It can support account lists, shared account views, campaign personalization, workflow automation and account-level reporting.

For example, HubSpot describes account recommendations and scoring, a central account view, marketing-sales collaboration, LinkedIn campaigns, automation and reporting among its ABM capabilities (HubSpot’s ABM product page). The vendor says its ABM software is available in premium versions of its marketing and sales software; check the current packaging, region, features and contract terms directly with HubSpot (HubSpot’s ABM FAQ).

#1 Best Overall

When it fits

  • Your CRM is already the team’s source of truth for account ownership and activity.
  • You need a shared marketing-sales view and workflows more than a new layer of external account data or advertising orchestration.
  • You want to build an initial ABM motion using existing systems, while checking whether the account hierarchy and data quality are adequate.

What to evaluate

Check how the product represents parent and subsidiary accounts, whether sales and marketing can see the same activity, how flexibly workflows and personalization can be configured, and whether reports connect account engagement to pipeline. Confirm which functions require particular product tiers or integrations.

2. Dedicated ABM platforms

A dedicated ABM platform is designed to coordinate account discovery and selection, planning, engagement and reporting at scale. Depending on the product, it may unify first-party data from your own systems with third-party account and intent data, then activate campaigns across multiple channels. Capabilities vary, so “ABM platform” should not be taken to mean every product includes the same data, channels or measurement.

Rank #2

Gartner Peer Insights describes ABM platforms through capabilities including account-level third-party intent data and native display campaign management, alongside account discovery, engagement and measurement criteria (Gartner Peer Insights’ ABM platform category). These criteria are useful when distinguishing a broader platform from a tool focused on only one layer of the work.

When it fits

  • You need to coordinate account selection, engagement and reporting across several channels or teams.
  • Your program requires a unified view of internal account data and external signals.
  • You have the operational capacity to define target accounts, align sales and marketing, and act on the platform’s insights.

What to evaluate

Compare account discovery and list management; how first- and third-party data are combined; which intent sources are included; campaign activation across display, social, email, web and sales engagement; native display-ad workflows; account and journey measurement; and integration with your CRM or salesforce automation system.

Gartner’s product listings include examples such as 6sense Revenue Intelligence Platform, ZoomInfo Marketing and Demandbase One. Their appearance in category listings or comparisons is not a universal ranking or proof that one will suit every team (Gartner Peer Insights’ ABM platform category).

3. Intent and account intelligence tools

Intent and account intelligence tools help teams identify, enrich and prioritize accounts by making account information and interest signals easier to interpret. Depending on the product, they may contribute external intent data, account attributes or recommendations to an ABM workflow; some capabilities are also bundled into dedicated platforms.

How to interpret intent

An intent signal is evidence of observed interest, not proof that an account is ready to buy. Ask what the signal represents, where it comes from, how it is associated with an account, and whether your team can see enough context to decide what action is appropriate. Gartner’s criteria for the ABM-platform category specify account-level third-party intent data, with at least one native source included in the platform license; verify the source and licensing terms for any product you consider (Gartner Peer Insights’ ABM platform category).

When it fits

This type can be useful when your team needs help deciding which accounts merit attention or wants to add external context to CRM records. Before acting on a signal, determine whether it is sufficiently specific and timely for your use, and agree with sales on how it should affect prioritization or outreach.

4. Account-based advertising and activation tools

These tools help marketers activate target-account audiences and engage them through paid campaigns. They may be a distinct layer in a broader stack rather than a complete ABM system. Salesforce describes targeted account-based advertising and multichannel engagement as ABM software functions (Salesforce’s ABM guide).

When comparing tools, check whether audiences can be built and updated from your account lists, which advertising channels are supported, and how campaign activity connects back to account records and measurement. Gartner’s category criteria include native display campaign management for ABM platforms; a dedicated activation tool may instead cover just the advertising layer, so establish what is native and what depends on integrations (Gartner Peer Insights’ ABM platform category).

How common are these tools in ABM programs?

The 2025 Account-based Marketing Benchmark Survey by Demand Gen Report asked respondents which technologies they use for ABM and allowed multiple selections. These figures describe respondent selections, not market share, and they should not be added together.

Technology selected Respondents
CRM 62%
Marketing automation platform 52%
Intent monitoring tools 46%
Campaign execution and orchestration tool 38%
Measurement and reporting tools 35%
Artificial intelligence tools 37%
Account-based advertising tools 24%

In the same 2025 survey, respondents selected proving ROI or attribution (47%), sales and marketing alignment (43%) and scaling existing ABM efforts (40%) as challenges. These are reported challenges, not a measure of any particular product’s performance (Demand Gen Report’s 2025 Account-based Marketing Benchmark Survey).

How to choose the right type for your team

  1. Start with your current account system. Identify where account ownership, hierarchy, contact activity and pipeline data live. If your CRM already supports the workflows and reporting you need, begin by assessing its native capabilities.
  2. Pinpoint the missing capability. Decide whether the gap is account data and prioritization, cross-channel orchestration, paid activation, or measurement. Avoid buying a broad platform to solve a narrowly defined problem unless its other capabilities are part of your plan.
  3. Trace data and integrations. Confirm how the tool receives account lists and activity, what it sends back, how duplicate or mismatched records are handled, and whether sales can use the resulting information in its existing workflow.
  4. Test the measurement model. Establish what the product measures at the account and journey level, how it attributes activity to pipeline, and what data or configuration is required. Engagement metrics alone do not establish revenue impact.
  5. Match scope to operating readiness. A team already managing target accounts in a CRM may reasonably start with CRM-native workflows. A team that needs unified external intent, native advertising orchestration and cross-channel account measurement may have reason to evaluate a dedicated platform. These are capability-based paths, not vendor rankings.

What to know about AI claims

In the 2025 Demand Gen Report survey, 45% of respondents selected improved personalization at scale among AI’s impacts on ABM, while nearly 70% said AI had no impact on ABM campaign outcomes and 3% called it a significant difference maker. These are respondent perceptions, not causal measurements showing that AI features improve campaign results (Demand Gen Report’s 2025 Account-based Marketing Benchmark Survey).
