To make PowerPoint advance slides automatically, select a slide and set Transitions > Timing > Advance Slide > After to the interval you want. Use Apply to All for one interval across the deck, or set slides individually. To time a spoken run-through, choose Slide Show > Rehearse Timings. Pausing rehearsal stops its timer; during a live presentation, press B to blank the screen and press it again to restore the slide.
Set a fixed display time for one or more slides
- In Normal view, select the slide you want to time.
- Open Transitions.
- Under Timing > Advance Slide, check After and enter the interval in minutes or seconds.
- Repeat for slides that need a different interval. To use the same interval throughout, select Apply to All.
- Leave On Mouse Click selected if a click should advance the slide sooner than its timer. Clear it if you want timer-only advancement.
If a slide contains animations or other effects, Microsoft says the automatic-advance timer starts after the final effect finishes. The entered interval therefore may not start when the slide first appears. These controls are documented for PowerPoint desktop releases including Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016; labels and availability can vary by version and platform. Microsoft’s transition timing instructions explain the settings.
Understand the difference between display time and transition speed
After sets how long PowerPoint waits before beginning to advance to the next slide. Duration sets how quickly the transition effect itself runs. Increasing Duration does not give the audience more time to read the slide; adjust After for that.
Set timings by rehearsing the presentation
Use Rehearse Timings when you want slide intervals based on your spoken delivery rather than a fixed value entered slide by slide.

- Choose Slide Show > Rehearse Timings.
- Present each slide at the pace you intend to use. Advance with Next, a click, or the Right Arrow key.
- Watch the rehearsal toolbar for the current slide time and total presentation time.
- At the end, choose Yes to save the timings or No to discard them.
To inspect the saved time for each slide, choose View > Slide Sorter. To pause timing during rehearsal, select Pause; choose Resume Recording when you want the timer to continue. Microsoft documents these steps in Rehearse and time the delivery of a presentation.
For a narrated show, PowerPoint also supports manual advance times alongside narration. Microsoft says PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 automatically records slide timings when narration is added; see Record a slide show with narration and slide timings.

Pause or hide a slide during a live presentation
Blank the projected screen
Press B during the show to display a black screen, then press B again to return to the current slide. This temporarily hides the slide; it does not pause a rehearsal recording or change the slide’s timing settings. Microsoft’s PowerPoint presentation shortcut guide lists platform-specific options, which can vary by operating system.
Pause the Presenter View timer
Presenter View has controls to pause or reset its speaker-facing slide timer, as well as a separate control to temporarily black out the screen. These controls are distinct from the rehearsal toolbar’s Pause button. See Microsoft’s Presenter View instructions.

Stop slides from advancing automatically
To prevent recorded timings from moving the presentation forward, choose Slide Show > Set Up Slide Show, then under Advance slides select Manually. If you want automatic timing again, switch back to Use Timings when that option is available. This changes advancement behavior; blanking the screen with B only hides the current slide temporarily.

For a display that should run without a presenter, choose Slide Show > Set Up Slide Show and select Browsed at a kiosk (full screen). Set the slide intervals under Transitions; kiosk mode loops the presentation until someone presses Esc. Microsoft’s self-running presentation guide covers the setup.
