If you can’t remove a Windows PC from your personal Microsoft account, sign in at account.microsoft.com/devices, select the PC, then choose Remove device—or open Show details > More actions > Remove—and confirm. If the PC is still missing from the list after a recent sign-in, Microsoft says it can take up to 24 hours to appear. The right fix depends on whether you mean the account’s device list, the Microsoft Store download limit, a work or school connection, or a Windows user profile.
First, identify what you want to remove
These actions affect different things and are not interchangeable:

Remove the PC from your personal Microsoft account
- Go to account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the PC.
- Find the PC. If needed, select Show details, then open More actions.
- Choose Remove or Remove device, depending on the page flow.
- Tick the confirmation box if prompted, then select Remove again.
Microsoft says Windows 10/11 devices are automatically added to the device list when you sign in. A newly registered device may take up to 24 hours to appear, so wait and check again if the PC is not listed yet. This timing is from Microsoft Support guidance checked on October 4, 2026.
If the PC still won’t come off the list
Microsoft’s published steps describe the removal flow but do not specify a universal fix for a missing button, a site error, a device record that looks wrong, or a listing that returns. Avoid registry edits, third-party cleanup tools, or resetting Windows as supposed account-list fixes; those are not established remedies for this problem.

- Make sure you are signed in to the account that owns the listing, and that you selected the correct PC.
- If the PC was only just registered, allow up to 24 hours for the device list to update.
- If the removal page shows an error or the control is unavailable, use Microsoft’s account sign-in helper or contact Microsoft Support with the exact error and account/device context. Microsoft notes that support agents cannot send password-reset links or access and change account details.
Unlink the PC if you need a Microsoft Store slot
Removing a device from the main account list is different from unlinking it for Microsoft Store downloads. Open account.microsoft.com/devices/content and choose Unlink for the relevant device. Microsoft Support says an account can have up to 10 devices attached for Microsoft Store app and content downloads. A device used to download content later may count again; this is not a permanent reservation of a freed slot. This limit reflects Microsoft Support guidance checked on October 4, 2026.
Disconnect a work or school account
If the PC is connected to an organization account, use Windows rather than the personal-account device page: open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the account, and choose Disconnect.

If you cannot access the PC, the organization’s My Account device list may offer an option to disable it. Disabling is consequential: Microsoft says the device can no longer authenticate with the organization or access its resources, and a user cannot undo an accidental disablement. Do not use this organization control as a substitute for removing a personal PC from your Microsoft account.
Remove a Windows user profile, not the PC listing
To remove another user’s sign-in from the computer, open Settings > Accounts > Other users, select the account, and choose Remove. Microsoft says this deletes that user’s sign-in information and data from the PC; it does not delete the person’s Microsoft account. Confirm that you have the right account and have backed up any needed files before proceeding.

Before selling, gifting, or recycling the PC
Microsoft advises backing up and resetting the PC before removing it from your Microsoft account. After the reset, use the personal-account device-list steps above if the PC is still listed. Removing the listing alone is not the same action as preparing the computer for transfer.
