The company announced the change on October 18, 2021, but did not publish a detailed account of its internal decision-making. Claims that user backlash, weak sales, or poor developer support caused the change remain theories, not reasons Apple confirmed.
What did Apple say about removing the Touch Bar?
In its October 18, 2021 announcement, Apple said: “Physical function keys — including a wider escape key — replace the Touch Bar, bringing back the familiar, tactile feel of mechanical keys that pro users love.” Apple’s MacBook Pro announcement presented tactile familiarity as the benefit of the change.
That statement explains Apple’s public rationale, not every factor behind the decision. Apple did not say in the announcement that a measured majority of customers disliked the Touch Bar, that developers failed to support it, or that Touch Bar models sold poorly. Contemporary coverage likewise noted that Apple had not offered a fuller explanation. MacRumors’ October 2021 report documented the new keyboard but did not establish those theories as causes.
What did the Touch Bar do?
The Touch Bar was a narrow, touch-sensitive strip above the keyboard on supported MacBook Pro models. Its controls could change according to the app in use: Apple’s developer documentation describes NSTouchBar items being supplied by the frontmost app. Apple’s NSTouchBar documentation describes that app-responsive approach.

That adaptability contrasted with physical function keys, which stay in fixed positions and can be identified by touch. The trade-off is about interface design: changing controls can offer app-specific shortcuts, while fixed keys provide stable tactile controls. The cited sources do not establish that one approach is objectively better for all users or provide comparative usability results.
When did Apple remove it, and what replaced it?
Apple announced the change with redesigned 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models on October 18, 2021. The Touch Bar was replaced by a full-height physical function row, including a wider Escape key. Apple introduced these keyboards as part of a broader redesign that also included new displays, ports, and M1 Pro and M1 Max chips; it did not identify one technical or commercial factor as the sole reason for the keyboard change. Apple’s announcement and the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) technical specifications document the change.
