To print from a Samsung Chromebook, connect a compatible printer over the same Wi-Fi network or by USB, then open the document, press Ctrl+P, select the printer under Destination, and click Print. ChromeOS printing does not support Bluetooth, and not every printer works with a Chromebook, so check compatibility for your exact model if it is not detected.

Before you start: choose a supported connection

Google supports compatible printers connected to a network or by USB. For network printing, the Chromebook and printer need to be on the same network. Google states that “Currently, Chromebooks don’t support Bluetooth printing.” See Google Chromebook Help: Set up your printer.

  • Wi-Fi or network: Convenient for printing without a direct cable, but both devices must share the same network.
  • USB: A direct connection supported by ChromeOS. The cable you need depends on the ports on your Chromebook and printer.
  • Bluetooth: Not supported for Chromebook printing; use a compatible network connection or USB instead.

Print from your Samsung Chromebook

  1. Connect the printer. For network printing, use the printer maker’s instructions to connect it to your home, work, or school network, then connect the Chromebook to that same network. For USB printing, connect the printer to the Chromebook with a suitable cable. Follow any on-screen notification or instructions that appear.
  2. Open the item you want to print. This can be a document or a web page.
  3. Open the print dialog. Press Ctrl+P.
  4. Select the printer. Beside Destination, open the menu and choose See more. Select your printer. ChromeOS performs a compatibility check when you select a printer.
  5. Send the job. Choose Print.

Save a printer for next time

If ChromeOS has detected the printer, you can save it so it is easier to select later:

  1. Open Settings > Device > Printers and scanners > Print.
  2. Under Other available printers, find the printer and choose Save.
  3. Look under Your saved printers to confirm it was added.

If your printer doesn’t display

Check the connection and discovery

  • Make sure the printer is turned on and, for network printing, that the Chromebook and printer are on the same network.
  • Confirm Wi-Fi is on for the Chromebook and give ChromeOS a little time to discover network printers.
  • Check the printer manufacturer’s compatibility information for your exact model. Google links to resources from Brother, Canon, Epson, and HP, but those lists are not comprehensive. A “Works With Chromebook” certification is a stronger compatibility signal, not a reason to assume every model from a brand will work. See Google Chromebook Help: Find compatible Chromebook printers.

Add the printer manually

If discovery does not find the printer, Google’s setup page provides a manual-add option:

Samsung Chromebook 4 Chrome OS 11.6" HD Intel Celeron Processor N4000 4GB RAM 32GB eMMC Gigabit Wi-Fi - XE310XBA-K01US
  • Compact, light design with 11. 6” display
  • Military-grade durability
  • Ultra-fast connectivity with Gigabit Wi-Fi
  • Advanced security with multiple layers of built-in virus protection
  • 12. 5 hours of battery life
  1. Open Settings > Device > Printers and scanners > Print.
  2. Under Other available printers, choose Add printer manually.
  3. Enter the printer’s network details. Google’s typical entries are the printer’s IP address, the IPP protocol, and the queue ipp/print.

These are common settings, not guaranteed values for every printer. Find the IP address and confirm the correct settings in the printer’s documentation or with its manufacturer. If the Chromebook is managed by work or school and the manual-add option is unavailable, ask the administrator whether printer setup is restricted.

Advanced setup: manufacturer, model, and PPD files

If the automatic setup does not save the printer, ChromeOS offers an advanced setup flow where you can select a manufacturer and model. If the printer model is not listed, you can try providing a printer description file (PPD). Google explains that PPD files tell ChromeOS how to support a specific printer and are different from printer drivers.

  • Supported file formats: .ppd and .gzip.
  • Maximum file size: 250 KB.
  • If the manufacturer or model is not listed, Google says the printer may not be compatible. A generic PPD option is an attempted workaround, not a guarantee.

If the printer is saved but won’t print

  1. Open the printer settings and edit the saved entry. Check that its details are correct, especially if you added it manually.
  2. If the details are correct but printing still fails, remove the printer and add it again.
  3. If the problem continues, check with the printer manufacturer about a firmware update.

If the printer won’t connect to Wi-Fi

Turn the printer off and back on, then try connecting it to Wi-Fi again using the manufacturer’s instructions. If it still cannot connect, contact the printer maker for model-specific help.

Choosing a Chromebook printer

Before buying, look up the exact printer model in the manufacturer’s Chromebook compatibility information. Google points to resources from Brother, Canon, Epson, and HP, but says its linked lists are not exhaustive. A wireless connection alone does not establish that a printer is Chromebook-compatible. A certified “Works With Chromebook” model provides a stronger compatibility signal; otherwise, verify the model with its maker.
