Gemini can suggest folders for loose files in Google Drive, but it does not move them on its own: you review the suggestions and confirm any move. The feature is documented for Drive on the web in English, and requires an eligible Google account plan and Editor access to the files.
What Gemini’s Drive organization feature does
Google Drive’s “Suggest file moves” feature analyzes eligible loose files in My Drive or a folder and proposes moving them into existing folders or new ones. You can review and edit the proposed groupings before deciding what to move. It is a guided filing tool, not a promise that Gemini will understand every folder system or clean up an entire Drive automatically.
Google lists PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Microsoft Office files, images, videos with transcripts, and shortcuts as eligible items. You need Editor access to the files. The feature is documented for Drive on the web at Google Drive Help.
How to review and apply suggested file moves

Open Google Drive in a web browser and open My Drive or the folder containing files you want to organize.

If Drive shows “Suggest file moves,” open it to see Gemini’s proposed folders and file groupings.

Review the destination for each file. You can refine the grouping with a prompt, such as “Group these by year,” or ask for organization by project or meeting notes. You can also adjust how many new folders to create, shorten folder names, or try another suggestion.

Rename proposed folders or change a suggested destination if the structure does not fit the way you use Drive. Select only the files you want moved.

Choose “Move files,” then confirm with “Create and move.” Files are moved only after you give this permission and confirmation.

If a suggestion is unsuitable, reject it. Google says a rejected file-and-folder pair will not be suggested again for 30 days. After a move, you can use Undo; folders created as part of the operation remain, to help prevent data loss.
When Gemini is useful—and when manual filing is better
Suggestions can help when many loose files need a first-pass structure and you can recognize the right destinations during review. They are less helpful when filenames or contents are ambiguous, folder rules are very specific, or every file needs a carefully chosen location. In those cases, manual foldering gives you direct control; you can also use Gemini’s suggestions only for the files whose proposed destinations make sense.

Finding and summarizing files are separate from moving them. Gemini in Drive can answer natural-language questions about files and provide AI Overviews based on file contents. Google advises clicking inline citations to inspect the source files. Its scope settings can include Drive, Gmail attachments and links, Chat uploads and links, and Calendar attachments and links; those settings do not change standard Drive search. Drive also documents summaries for supported files and folders, including summary cards for PDFs and videos with transcripts, which can be disabled. “Catch me up” can summarize changes and comments to a Google Doc or Sheet since your last view; it is web-only. These features can help you understand what files contain, but they are not the file-move workflow. Details are in Google Drive Help.

Access, language, and device limits
As documented on October 4, 2026, suggested file moves require Drive on the web and English. Do not assume the feature is available in Drive’s Android or iOS apps just because other Gemini in Drive capabilities may be available on mobile.

Gemini in Drive requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. Work or school accounts and personal accounts have different eligibility paths, and features can vary by plan and language. Check the current requirements for your account on Google’s Gemini in Drive availability page and Google AI plans. Access can also depend on having Editor permission for the individual files.

Google says Workspace content used by Gemini in Workspace is not used to train or improve underlying generative AI models without permission. That statement concerns Workspace Gemini; it should not be treated as a blanket description of the Gemini Apps experience. Google’s Workspace privacy information explains the Workspace context and notes that sharing Workspace data with Gemini Apps or Search under certain personal-account features is handled under those services’ terms.
For Gemini in Drive, Google says prompts, generated text, referenced Workspace content, and feedback are used and stored, and that human reviewers may process interaction data. Drive conversations are not saved to Gemini Apps Activity; deleting Drive conversation history does not delete information saved in Gemini Apps Activity. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, separately says Gemini Apps can receive prompts and files users share, and that human reviewers may review some data. Google advises users not to enter confidential information they would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve services; work and school account handling may differ. Read the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub for that product’s terms.
Google’s Drive disclaimer cautions: “Gemini features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information.” Inspect folder names and destinations before confirming a move, especially when file contents or names could be sensitive or easy to misclassify.
