Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your Google Pixel feels slow, first work out whether the lag affects the whole phone, one app, or only internet-connected tasks. Then follow Google’s troubleshooting order: restart, check Android updates, inspect free storage, update apps, and test for a troublesome downloaded app. These steps can identify common causes, but Google does not promise that any single setting will make every Pixel faster.
Is the whole Pixel slow, or just one app or connection?
Notice where the delay happens before changing settings. Does Settings, the home screen, and more than one app lag, or does the problem appear only in a particular app? If pages, streams, or downloads are slow while the rest of the phone responds normally, investigate the internet connection rather than treating it as a phone-performance problem. Google’s Pixel Phone Help troubleshooting guide distinguishes slow phone response from connection trouble.
- Several apps and basic navigation lag: follow the system-wide checks below.
- One app lags: update and diagnose that app before making broad changes.
- Only online activity is slow: check the network connection.
Restart the phone and check for Android updates
Restart first, then check whether the problem remains. The restart controls differ by model: Google says Pixel 5a and earlier use a long press on the Power button, while Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, use Power and Volume Up together to open the power menu. Follow the controls for your model and software version if those labels have changed.
Next, check for an Android software update in Settings. Menu names can vary by Android release; use the system update option in Settings and install any available update. Restart after the update and check whether the lag persists. Google’s guidance recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step so you can tell whether it helped.

Check how much storage is free
Open Settings > Storage and review available space. Google Pixel Phone Help says, “Your phone can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available.” That is a troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that freeing space will restore speed.
Storage is where files such as photos and music are kept; memory is what Android and apps use while they run. Deleting files can free storage, but it is not the same as increasing memory. Remove only files you recognize and have backed up or no longer need.

- Back up or move important files before deleting them.
- To copy files and folders to a computer, connect the Pixel with a USB cable and transfer them before removing them from the phone. Google’s file-transfer instructions explain the process.
- After freeing space, restart the phone and check whether the response has improved.
Update apps and investigate app-specific lag
Open Google Play, go to your profile, and check Manage apps & device for available app updates. Update apps, restart, and see whether the slow response remains.
If only one app is affected, distinguish temporary cache from saved app data before clearing anything. Google’s app troubleshooting guidance explains the difference:
- Clear cache deletes temporary data. The app may take longer to open the next time while it rebuilds that data.
- Clear storage permanently deletes that app’s data from the phone. It may remove settings, locally saved content, or other information. Back up or export anything important first, and use this only when you understand what the app stores.
Google says, “You don’t usually need to close apps.” Don’t routinely close every app as a speed fix. If an app is unresponsive, close or force-stop that app; force-stop is for a stuck app, not a general performance optimization.
Use safe mode to test downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps, which can help identify whether one is behind system-wide lag. Follow Google’s instructions for starting and using safe mode for your Pixel model.

- Start the phone in safe mode and use it long enough to check the actions that were slow.
- If the lag disappears, a downloaded app may be responsible. Remove recently downloaded apps one at a time.
- Restart and test after each removal. If the problem returns after reinstalling an app, that app may be involved again.
Know what battery and display settings actually change
Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization
Adaptive Battery learns how you use the phone and can limit background activity. That can extend battery life but may also affect app performance or delay notifications. Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization on. After setup or a factory reset, Google says optimization can take a few weeks to learn usage patterns; a delayed notification or background task is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the phone’s processor is slow. For a single misbehaving app, diagnose that app rather than broadly disabling battery controls. See Google’s Adaptive Battery guidance.
Smooth Display
On supported Pixel models, Smooth Display can make scrolling and motion look more fluid by changing the display’s refresh behavior. It does not make the processor do work faster. Google notes that the feature increases battery use and is disabled when Battery Saver is on; availability and maximum refresh rates depend on the model. If motion looks choppy but apps respond promptly, check Settings > Display > Smooth Display if that option is available on your phone. Google lists model-specific details in its display settings guidance.

Reserve a factory reset for last
A factory reset is an advanced troubleshooting step, not a first-line speed setting. Google warns that it removes phone data, apps, and associated app data. If you reach this point, back up anything you want to keep and consult Google’s factory-reset instructions for your model. Reinstalling the app that caused the original problem can bring the issue back, so restore apps selectively and check the phone as you go.
