That arrangement, often called a phantom center, can be a sensible choice when it suits your speakers and listening setup. A physical center is useful when you want dialogue and other screen-associated sounds to come from a speaker positioned at the display.
What does the center channel do?
In a multichannel home theater, the center channel carries much of the dialogue. Dolby puts it plainly: “Center speakers are primarily used to deliver dialog.” The channel can also carry other sounds associated with the on-screen action.
A dedicated center speaker places those sounds near the screen. Whether that is preferable depends on your front speakers, receiver, room, seating, and where a center can be installed. The available guidance does not establish that a physical center improves dialogue for every system or listener.
How a phantom center works
If no center speaker is connected, a compatible receiver can route center-channel sounds to the front left and right speakers. This is commonly called a phantom center. The image is produced by the pair rather than by a speaker below or above the display.

Do not assume every receiver handles this automatically or that every left/right pair will create an equally convincing image. Check the receiver’s speaker setup and manual, and confirm that the front speakers can reproduce the redirected content. Should you choose a dedicated center or a phantom center?

These are practical decision factors, not measured performance rankings. The cited setup guidance does not quantify how dialogue imaging differs across seats or establish that either arrangement is universally better.

How to place and set up a center speaker
Position it by the display
Place the center between the front left and right speakers, just above or below the TV. Dolby recommends positioning it near the screen and directing its sound toward the listener; Denon’s AVC-X2850H speaker-installation guidance likewise places it between the front speakers, above or below the TV. That Denon page is an example, not a substitute for the manual for your receiver model and region.
Aim it toward the listening position
If the speaker sits well above or below seated ear level, tilt it toward the listening position when the speaker and installation allow. Crutchfield recommends considering seated ear level for clearer dialogue, while recognizing that the best TV viewing height may not allow that placement. Check receiver configuration and controls
Set the receiver to match the speakers actually connected, then follow its setup or calibration procedure. If dialogue is still difficult to understand, verify the configuration and placement before changing processing. Some receivers provide dialogue or vocal modes, or a center-level adjustment; availability and names vary by model, so consult the receiver manual rather than assuming a control exists.

- Fit: Check the speaker’s dimensions against the space below or above the display, and make sure its sound will not be blocked.
- Aiming: Look for a practical way to direct the speaker toward the listening position.
- Front-stage match: A model that matches the front left and right speakers can help maintain a consistent front stage, but matching is a design consideration rather than a universal requirement. In a dedicated theater with an acoustically transparent screen, identical speakers behind the screen are one possible approach.
- Orientation: Do not assume a conventional vertically oriented speaker will perform as intended when turned on its side. If horizontal placement is necessary, choose a model designed for that orientation or a purpose-designed LCR speaker.
- Bass and system fit: A center does not need to provide much bass, according to Crutchfield’s buying guide. Check that the receiver supports the intended speaker configuration.
- Dialogue for your seats: Choose for the room and listening positions you need to serve; the cited sources do not identify a universally best model or quantify results across seats.
A powered soundbar is not simply a receiver-connected center speaker. Treat it as a different type of system rather than an equivalent purchase for adding a discrete center channel.
