Sysmon records detailed Windows activity for other tools to collect and analyze; Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE) combines endpoint telemetry with cloud analytics to detect threats and support investigation and response. They are not direct substitutes. Sysmon gives security teams configurable, low-level event data, while MDE is an endpoint security service with built-in sensors and security workflows. They can also be used together.
What does Sysmon monitor?
Sysmon is a Windows system service and device driver that stays resident after installation and records selected system activity in Windows Event Log. Its documented events provide low-level telemetry, including:
- Process creation: process and parent-process command lines, image hashes, and process and session GUIDs that help correlate related events.
- Driver and DLL loads: records of drivers and dynamic-link libraries loaded by processes.
- Network connections: optional events with process, address, port, and hostname context.
- Disk and volume access: records of raw access to disks or volumes.
- File timestamp changes: events for changes to file creation times.
- Other system activity: event classes include process execution, network communication, file modification, and configuration changes.
Administrators define what Sysmon records through its filtering and configuration options. On modern Windows systems, events appear in the Microsoft-Windows-Sysmon/Operational log. Microsoft documents collection through Windows Event Collection, SIEM agents, and cloud-based ingestion pipelines. Event timestamps are recorded in UTC. See Microsoft’s Sysmon overview and Sysmon events reference.
Sysmon generates telemetry; it does not analyze the events it creates. Detection, investigation, and response require another tool or service to collect and act on them.

What does Microsoft Defender for Endpoint monitor?
MDE continuously collects behavioral cyber telemetry through endpoint sensors. Microsoft’s examples include process information, network activity, kernel and memory-manager signals, user logins, registry changes, and file-system changes. Its data-collection documentation also identifies file, process, registry, network-connection, device, and software-inventory data.
The endpoint sensors collect and process operating-system signals, then send sensor data to the tenant’s cloud instance. Cloud analytics and threat intelligence help turn those signals into insights and detections. MDE’s broader workflow can include alerts, investigation, and response actions. The data collected and available features depend on the service plan and configuration; the documented categories should not be taken to mean every feature is available in every deployment. More detail is available in Microsoft’s overview of endpoint detection and response, data storage and privacy documentation, and Defender for Endpoint architecture description.

How do Sysmon and Defender for Endpoint differ?
| Comparison | Sysmon | Defender for Endpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Configurable generation of detailed Windows event telemetry | Endpoint security telemetry, detection, investigation, and response service |
| Where data goes | Sysmon Operational event log, then a collection or SIEM pipeline | Behavioral sensor data is sent to the Defender cloud service |
| Analysis | Does not analyze its own events | Cloud analytics and threat intelligence help produce detections and support investigation |
| Configuration emphasis | Administrator-defined event filtering and collection | Service onboarding, policy, and plan-dependent capabilities, with built-in behavioral sensors |
| Operational value | Fine-grained context for troubleshooting, hunting, and correlation in other tools | Managed security visibility with alerting and response workflows |
This is a comparison of roles and documented capabilities, not a performance benchmark. The documentation does not establish that one provides broader coverage or is superior in every environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Sysmon and Defender for Endpoint run together?
Yes. Microsoft says Defender for Endpoint and other EDR platforms can consume Sysmon events to enhance detection logic. In that arrangement, Sysmon supplies selected Windows event detail and the consuming platform can use it alongside its own telemetry. Sysmon’s filtering options let administrators tailor collection and manage event volume or overlap.

There is one important distinction when enabling Sysmon: Microsoft’s current overview says the built-in Windows Sysmon and the standalone version cannot both be enabled on the same device at the same time. This is about the two Sysmon versions, not a general incompatibility between Sysmon and Defender for Endpoint. Consult Microsoft’s Sysmon overview for the coexistence detail.
