What Time Warner Cable reported in January 2016
Time Warner Cable said the FBI notified the company that customer email addresses and associated account passwords may have been compromised. In a statement quoted by SecurityWeek on January 7, 2016, the company said approximately 320,000 customers across its markets could be impacted. Reuters, in a report republished by Fortune, likewise described up to 320,000 customers as potentially affected.
The wording matters: the estimate described a population that could be affected, not 320,000 accounts confirmed stolen. The contemporary reports do not establish a final victim count, a list of affected accounts, or how many accounts were actually misused.
Was Time Warner Cable hacked?
The company said it had no indication that its own computer systems had been breached at that point. It also said it had not determined how the credentials were obtained. Therefore, the 2016 report does not establish that an attacker penetrated Time Warner Cable’s systems.

Time Warner Cable described phishing-related malware and breaches at other companies holding customer information as likely ways the credentials might have been collected. Those were possible explanations offered at the time, not confirmed causes or final forensic findings. The contemporaneous reporting does not establish what the FBI ultimately found.
Which customers and email accounts were involved?
Some contemporaneous coverage connected the incident with Road Runner email accounts. A Portland Press Herald report described email passwords for up to 320,000 customers nationwide. That does not mean every Time Warner Cable subscriber used Road Runner email, or that every subscriber was affected. The company said it was notifying customers by email and direct mail and encouraging them to change their email passwords as a precaution, as reported by Reuters.

What to do if you receive an account-security message
The incident is historical; it is not evidence that present-day accounts or systems are affected. If you receive an unexpected message claiming an account needs a password reset, treat the message cautiously rather than following its links or downloading attachments.
- Go to the provider’s known official website by entering its address yourself, or contact it through a channel you already trust. The FTC warns that phishing messages can impersonate familiar organizations and try to obtain credentials or prompt downloads.
- If you believe a password was exposed, change it promptly through the official site. Do not reuse that password on other services; change it on any other account where you used the same one.
- Be alert for requests to disclose your password or install software. A security notice should not be treated as proof that the sender is genuine.
The FTC’s Cybersecurity for Small Business guidance advises changing compromised passwords and avoiding password reuse; it also explains common phishing tactics. These are general precautions, not evidence that a particular message or account relates to the 2016 incident.

What the public record does not establish
The contemporaneous coverage quoted company statements but did not establish the final FBI findings, the definitive source of the credential data, a confirmed victim list, or the number of accounts actually misused. It also does not support a claim that all 320,000 estimated customers were confirmed victims or that Time Warner Cable’s own systems were breached.
