Microsoft announced Visual Studio Code 1.0 on April 14, 2016, roughly a year after its first preview. The milestone moved the cross-platform editor from preview and beta development to a release with a stable extension API, compatibility commitment, and a fuller focus on performance, accessibility, localization, and core coding workflows. Microsoft also reported adoption figures at the time—but those are historical company-reported numbers, not current usage totals.

When did Visual Studio Code 1.0 arrive?

Microsoft announced Visual Studio Code 1.0 on April 14, 2016, in its release post. The product had first appeared as a preview at //build/ 2015. Microsoft later declared it Beta quality at Connect(); 2015, where it also described an extensibility model and Visual Studio Marketplace support.

The move to 1.0 followed a deliberate shift toward open development. Microsoft said it open-sourced the repository and many of its extensions in November 2015. In the months after that, the team said the project had received more than 300 pull requests since opening development less than four months earlier. Those are figures from the 2016 announcement, not current contribution totals.

Why Microsoft built a local, cross-platform editor

The team’s starting question was whether a browser-based code editor could feel native—and respond quickly enough that typing would not feel like typing in a browser. Microsoft described an early effort to bring source-code features such as suggestions, error and warning indicators, and Go to Definition into a browser-based editor.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The project then evolved into a local tool built with Node.js. Microsoft chose Electron, which combines web and native UI with a Node.js API, to make an installable, cross-platform editor for developers working with different kinds of source code. This origin helps explain the product’s blend of familiar editor workflows, web technologies, and extension-driven language support.

What changed at the 1.0 milestone?

Core coding and debugging workflows

Microsoft described VS Code as a cross-platform development tool centered on code editing and debugging. Its 1.0 announcement highlighted editing and navigation, streamlined debugging, and built-in Git support. These were the product’s core capabilities in the announcement, rather than a claim that every language or workflow had identical support.

Stability, performance, accessibility, and localization

Version 1.0 was framed as a quality milestone, not simply a feature-count release. The contemporaneous March 2016 release notes emphasize quality, accessibility, global reach, and performance. They highlight nine localized display languages, improvements to JavaScript support through the TypeScript language service codenamed “Salsa,” simpler creation of jsconfig.json and tasks.json, support for adding file extensions to existing languages, and column text selection in the editor.

The launch post also called out keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and accessible navigation for visually impaired developers. Microsoft reported that the download was under 40 MB, including support for nine additional languages; that size is specific to the 2016 announcement and should not be read as the current installer size.

A stable extension API

Extensibility was central to the 1.0 story. Microsoft said the Marketplace had more than 1,000 community-built extensions at announcement time, including support for Node.js, Go, C++, PHP, and Python, along with linters and other developer tools. The team also noted that JavaScript and TypeScript language services were themselves extensions, demonstrating how the product’s own capabilities could use the API exposed to extension authors.

The team’s API announcement was explicit: “With this great ecosystem in place, we’re now confident in declaring our API as stable, and guaranteeing compatibility going forward.” This records Microsoft’s 2016 compatibility commitment; it should not be expanded into a guarantee about every later API, extension, or version.

What adoption figures did Microsoft report?

In its April 14, 2016 announcement, Microsoft said that VS Code had reached these figures:

2016 announcement figure What Microsoft said it measured
2 million Developers who had installed VS Code since its initial launch about a year earlier.
More than 500,000 Developers actively using VS Code each month.
More than 1,000 Community-built extensions available.

These were Microsoft’s own dated figures, not independently audited measurements. They describe the product’s reported scale in April 2016 and are not present-day user or extension counts.

What followed version 1.0?

Microsoft’s first monthly release after 1.0 was version 1.1, the April 2016 build. Its release notes list workflow changes such as resizing panes by double-clicking editor borders, reopening the last closed file, and launching a preferred shell in a new terminal. The update also included debugging improvements and extension-authoring work, including Language Server Protocol 2.0 consistency with the core API, automated Debug Adapter testing, and APIs for folders and JSON files.

The accompanying Microsoft blog post was dated May 9, 2016, and described the build as the first monthly release following the 1.0 announcement “last month.” The 1.1 release illustrates how the project continued its monthly cadence after the stability milestone.

What 1.0 meant—and what it did not mean

Version 1.0 marked Microsoft’s transition from an early cross-platform editor preview toward a more mature, extensible developer tool. The substantive signals were the emphasis on quality and accessibility, the built-in editing, navigation, debugging, and Git capabilities, a growing community extension ecosystem, and a declared stable API with a stated compatibility commitment.

Microsoft described the product as bringing “the industry-leading experiences of Visual Studio to a streamlined development workflow.” That was the team’s promotional framing, not an independently established comparison with Visual Studio or competing editors. The 1.0 announcement and its associated notes document a 2016 release milestone; they do not establish current product status, present-day adoption, or comparative performance.
