You can watch some live TV online for free without a cable subscription through ad-supported services such as The Roku Channel and Pluto TV. Their lineups are not a replacement for every cable channel or local broadcast station. If local over-the-air channels are your priority, an HDTV antenna is a separate option that does not require internet streaming.
Free live-TV options you can watch online
Start with a service that offers a live channel guide, then check its current lineup on your device and in your country. Channel counts and availability can change.
| Option | What it offers | Useful to know |
|---|---|---|
| The Roku Channel | Roku advertises 500+ free live channels, with categories including news, weather, sports, food and home, reality, and kids’ programming. | Roku also lists some local streaming news options. The lineup is not evidence that every local broadcast affiliate or paid cable network is included. |
| Pluto TV | Pluto TV says viewers can stream 100+ live channels in a web browser and lists mobile, streaming-device, smart-TV, and desktop routes. | Its channel count and device availability may change and can vary by region. |
| Plex | Plex describes a free, ad-supported live-TV service. | Details about its current lineup and device support are not established here. Check Plex’s own guide before relying on a particular channel. |
| HDTV antenna | Receives local over-the-air broadcasts on compatible televisions; this is not online streaming. | Reception depends on location, antenna placement, and signal conditions. |
What “free live TV” includes—and what it doesn’t
Free streaming services generally support their content with advertising, so free does not mean commercial-free. A service’s channel guide is also not the same as a cable lineup: a familiar network name or a local-news stream does not guarantee access to that network’s full paid feed or your local broadcast affiliate.
For instance, Tubi says it is a free, legal streaming service funded by ads, but the official pages cited here describe movies and TV shows rather than establishing a live-TV offering. It is an on-demand option, not a confirmed answer for watching live channels.

How to choose and start watching
- Choose a service. The Roku Channel and Pluto TV are starting points for free live streaming. Check each service’s current availability for your device and location.
- Use the official app or website. Pluto TV lists browser viewing as well as apps for supported devices. The Roku Channel is an option to check if you already use a Roku device or have access to its service on a supported platform.
- Check the live guide. Search for the specific channel or type of programming you want. Confirm it is currently listed; do not assume a free stream is the same as a full paid network feed.
- Confirm device support. Pluto TV lists categories including smart TVs, streaming devices, phones, and desktop apps, but support can vary. Consult the service’s official device information for your exact model.
If you mainly want local broadcast stations
Use an HDTV antenna if your goal is over-the-air local broadcasting rather than internet-based channels. Roku Support describes connecting an antenna to a Roku TV’s Ant/Cable In port and scanning for channels. The channels you receive depend on your location and the antenna’s positioning, so reception is not guaranteed everywhere. An antenna does not provide cable channels or turn broadcast TV into online streaming.
