There is no single runtime for a Milwaukee battery: it depends on the compatible battery’s capacity, the specific device, and its operating setting. Milwaukee’s published examples range from 2 hours for an M18 fan on high with an XC5.0 battery to 36 hours for an M18 stick light on low with the same battery. Those figures apply only to the named model, battery, and setting.
Milwaukee battery runtime examples
The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent comparative test results. Milwaukee’s reviewed product pages do not state a publication year for these figures, so the examples are presented without an assumed date.
| Device | Battery | Setting | Published runtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| M18 Brushless 18-inch Fan (0821-20) | M18 XC5.0 | High | 2 hours (Milwaukee) |
| M18 Brushless 18-inch Fan (0821-20) | M18 XC5.0 | Low | 9 hours (Milwaukee) |
| M18 Brushless 18-inch Fan (0821-20) | M18 HD12.0 | High | 5 hours (Milwaukee) |
| M18 Brushless 18-inch Fan (0821-20) | M18 HD12.0 | Low | 23 hours (Milwaukee) |
| M12 Mounting Fan (0820-20) | M12 XC6.0 | Not specified | Up to 16 hours (Milwaukee) |
| M18 Stick Light (2352-20) | M18 XC5.0 | High, 300 lumens | 17 hours (Milwaukee) |
| M18 Stick Light (2352-20) | M18 XC5.0 | Low, 150 lumens | 36 hours (Milwaukee) |
The fan examples show why setting matters: the 0821-20 is listed for 2 hours on high and 9 on low with an XC5.0, and 5 hours on high and 23 on low with an HD12.0. The stick light’s lower-output mode is also listed for longer use than high. Do not treat one device’s figure as a prediction for a different device.
How to estimate runtime for your Milwaukee setup
- Check compatibility first. Read the battery and device labels and confirm they belong to the same system. M12 and M18 are distinct systems; matching amp-hour numbers do not make batteries interchangeable. Milwaukee says its system designation identifies the associated tool system and voltage (Milwaukee battery compatibility).
- Read the battery capacity. Milwaukee explains that the capacity number at the end of the battery label represents amp-hours; a higher number means longer runtime (Milwaukee battery guide). This helps indicate relative capacity, but does not by itself calculate guaranteed runtime for a particular device.
- Look up the exact device and setting. Use a runtime figure for the specific model, battery, and operating mode. If Milwaukee does not list runtime for that combination, an exact figure is unavailable; do not extrapolate from another tool.
- Interpret the wording carefully. “Up to” is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a promise of what every user will get. Milwaukee defines runtime as how long a battery runs before it needs recharging (Milwaukee battery guide).
What about other Milwaukee devices?
For a radio, another light, or a different tool, use that model’s published runtime rather than borrowing the fan or stick-light estimate. Runtime depends on the device’s workload and operating mode, and the reviewed product pages do not provide a common standardized test protocol for comparing different models. As a result, their figures are useful for the named setup but do not establish a universal runtime for “a Milwaukee battery.”

Is the older M18 Jobsite Fan runtime still relevant?
Milwaukee’s older M18 Jobsite Fan (0886-20) product page reports up to 17 hours on low with an XC5.0, but the page says the model is no longer available. Treat that as a model-specific historical specification, not a current product recommendation. For a current fan example, Milwaukee’s Brushless 18-inch Fan (0821-20) page lists the mode-specific runtimes above (older 0886-20 page).
