There is no fixed mileage at which every carbon-plated marathon shoe needs replacing. Use 300–500 miles (500–800 km) as a general running-shoe check-in range—not a guaranteed lifespan for carbon racers—and weigh visible wear, comfort, support, and traction alongside mileage.

How many miles do carbon-plated shoes last?

Nike says many experts recommend replacing running shoes after 300–500 miles (500–800 km), while emphasizing that there is no hard-and-fast rule. adidas gives the same 300–500-mile range as a rule of thumb. Both figures apply to running shoes generally; neither establishes a service-life guarantee for carbon-plated marathon shoes.

How long a pair lasts depends on factors such as running surface, how often and how far you run, the shoe’s construction, its condition, and how it feels on your feet. The available evidence does not establish a dependable calendar-time conversion or a universal mileage at which a carbon plate fails. Start tracking mileage from the first run, then use it as a prompt to inspect the pair rather than as an automatic retirement date. Nike’s replacement guidance and adidas’ shoe-selection guidance both frame mileage as a general guide.

When should I replace my carbon-plated running shoes?

Inspect the shoe and consider how it performs. No single sign gives a perfect measure of remaining life, so look at the cushioning, outsole, upper, and your own comfort and support together.

Check the cushioning and midsole

Look for midsole compression and pay attention to whether the cushioning feels less responsive or supportive than it did when the shoe was newer. adidas identifies compressed cushioning and reduced energy return or support as signs of wear.

Check the outsole and traction

Inspect the tread, especially in areas that contact the ground most. Worn tread can reduce traction; consider whether the outsole still grips reliably on the surfaces where you run.

Check the upper and fit

Fraying or stretching in the upper can affect how well it supports your foot. A shoe that no longer holds your foot comfortably is a reason to reassess it, even if its mileage is below the general check-in range.

Notice comfort and body feedback

Changes in comfort or support matter alongside visible wear. Nike advises runners to consider how their bodies respond and notes that worn-out shoes can contribute to overuse problems. Mileage alone cannot determine whether a shoe is safe or unsafe for a particular runner.

What do durability reports on carbon racers actually show?

Reports about individual shoes can be useful, but they measure different things and should not be treated as a category-wide lifespan ranking.

One reviewer’s Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 observation

In an October 2, 2026 review, a Tom’s Guide reviewer reported worrying wear after running 35 miles in the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3. That is one reviewer’s observation about one model, not a dependable forecast for other carbon-plated shoes or runners. Read the Tom’s Guide review.

A 300-mile foam study is not a whole-shoe lifespan test

A preprint submitted in September 2026 by Jeremy A. McCulloch and Ellen Kuhl examined foam from one elite racing shoe. The authors report that the foam “retains its mechanical response across all three loading modes and shoe regions” after the tested shoe had 300 miles. This is a result about foam response in one shoe; it does not establish how long the complete shoe retains its race performance or when carbon-plated shoes generally should be replaced. A practical replacement check

  1. Track mileage from your first run. Treat 300–500 miles as a general prompt to check the pair, not a mandatory replacement point.
  2. Inspect the whole shoe. Look for compressed cushioning, worn tread, and a stretched or frayed upper.
  3. Assess how it feels. Consider whether comfort, traction, responsiveness, or support has changed.
  4. Factor in how and where you use it. Surface, running frequency and distance, and the individual shoe’s construction all matter.
  5. Make the call using the evidence together. Replace the shoe when its condition or feel no longer meets your needs; do not infer that a carbon plate has failed from mileage alone.

The cited reports do not provide a controlled durability comparison across carbon-plated models, runners, and surfaces. Visible outsole wear, midsole response, upper condition, and reviewer observations are different kinds of evidence, so they cannot be combined into a reliable universal lifespan ranking.
