Apple announced iPhone Air on September 9, 2025, and said it would be available starting September 19. The phone is 5.6 mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone Apple said it had made. That confirmed measurement differs from the 5.5 mm figure forecast before launch.
What happened to the ultra-thin iPhone rumor?
In January 2025, MacRumors reported analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s expectation of an ultra-thin “iPhone 17 Air” measuring 5.5 mm at its thinnest point, with no physical SIM slot. Those were pre-launch predictions, not final specifications (MacRumors, January 10, 2025).
Apple later announced the product as iPhone Air. Its September 9, 2025 announcement specified a 5.6 mm thickness and eSIM. The final name and measurement therefore differ from the early report (Apple, September 9, 2025).

- Universal Carrier Compatibility: This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.)

- Availability: Apple listed September 19, 2025 as the initial availability date.
These are Apple’s announced specifications; they are not independent performance or battery-test results.
What are the trade-offs of the thin design?
The 5.6 mm body is the defining feature, but deciding whether it suits you means weighing that slimness against the rest of the phone. Consider whether the 6.5-inch display and refresh rate meet your needs, whether the announced camera system fits the photos you take, and whether you want a very thin phone enough to account for battery needs, protection and the launch-era price.

Apple said iPhone Air delivers all-day battery life, but its announcement does not establish independent battery-test results. For people who expect heavier use, Apple also announced an optional iPhone Air MagSafe Battery. Apple advertised up to 40 hours of video playback when the battery is used with iPhone Air; that is Apple’s accessory-and-phone claim, not an independently verified result.
Which iPhone Air accessories did Apple announce?
Apple announced a model-specific MagSafe case, a bumper, a crossbody strap and the MagSafe Battery. A case or bumper may matter if you want added protection for a phone whose appeal is its thin profile; the battery is an option for those who want additional power. Check current availability and pricing before buying, since the announcement establishes launch-era details rather than current stock or prices.

Is iPhone Air the phone to choose?
iPhone Air is the confirmed 2025 answer to reports about an ultra-thin iPhone, but thinness alone does not establish that it is the right choice for every buyer. Compare its screen, cameras, battery needs, protection options and current price with the phones you are considering. John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, described it as “so powerful, yet impossibly thin and light”; that is Apple’s characterization, not an independent assessment.
