Start by verifying the breach notice and identifying exactly what information was exposed. Then secure the affected accounts and contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or government agency. Exposure does not prove that anyone has misused your information, but acting promptly can reduce risk and help you spot problems. This guide covers U.S. procedures; readers elsewhere should use their country’s official identity-theft and credit-reporting authorities.

What should you do after a data breach?

  1. Verify the notice. Find out what information was involved, which accounts may be affected, and whether the organization offers a free service. Do not use an unexpected message link to sign in or provide information. Go to the organization’s known official website or use a contact method you already trust. The FTC’s data breach guidance can help you decide what to do.
  2. Secure exposed accounts. Change the exposed password and any reused password. Use a unique, strong password, sign out other sessions, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where available, and check recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and account activity. Look for unfamiliar email-forwarding rules. If you are locked out, use the provider’s official account-recovery process.
  3. Contact the right financial institution. If a card number was exposed, ask the issuer whether to cancel and replace the card, and review transactions. If bank-account details were exposed or you see suspicious withdrawals, promptly contact the bank’s fraud team and ask about protections or replacing the account. Update legitimate automatic payments if the card or account details change.
  4. Protect your credit if a Social Security number was exposed. Review your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts. Consider placing a credit freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus; a freeze is free and remains until you lift it. A fraud alert is another option, and it can be used alongside a freeze.
  5. Escalate if you find misuse. Contact the affected company’s fraud department, secure or close the affected account, dispute unauthorized activity, and report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan and forms. Keep copies of the notice and records of calls, messages, and case numbers.

Match your response to the information exposed

Information exposed What to do
Username, password, or email/social account Change the exposed and reused passwords; sign out other sessions; enable 2FA; check recovery details, account activity, and forwarding rules. Use the provider’s official recovery process if locked out.
Credit or debit card number Contact the card issuer, ask whether to cancel and replace the card, review transactions, and update automatic payments if the number changes.
Bank-account information Contact the bank, review withdrawals, and ask whether to close or replace the account. Update automatic payments if the details change.
Social Security number Review credit reports for unfamiliar accounts and consider a freeze at all three bureaus or a fraud alert. If tax identity theft is a concern, see the IRS Identity Protection PIN guidance.
Driver’s-license information Contact your state motor-vehicle agency for instructions. Procedures vary; the state may flag the license number or advise you to request a duplicate.
A child’s personal information Ask the credit bureaus how to request a minor’s freeze. The FTC says a free freeze is available for a child under 16, using a process different from an adult’s.

Should you freeze your credit or place a fraud alert?

Both protections are free, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report; a fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit, while leaving report access open.

Protection What it does Cost and duration What you need to do
Credit freeze Restricts access to your credit report so new creditors generally cannot open an account in your name while the freeze is in effect. Free; remains until you lift it. Contact all three nationwide bureaus. Temporarily lift the freeze when a legitimate lender or other party needs to review your credit.
Initial fraud alert Asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit; it does not block access to your credit report. Free; lasts one year and can be renewed. Contact one bureau; it must notify the other two. You can also have a freeze.
Extended fraud alert Requests identity verification before new credit is granted. It is intended for people who have experienced identity theft. Free; lasts seven years. Renewal is subject to documentation. You need an FTC identity-theft report or police report. This is more relevant after confirmed identity theft than exposure alone.

The FTC explains that “A credit freeze lasts until you lift it.” See its current guidance on credit freezes and fraud alerts for bureau procedures.

Is credit monitoring worth it after a breach?

It can help you notice some changes, but it is not prevention or complete protection. Credit monitoring may alert you to certain changes in a credit report; it will not alert you to bank withdrawals or someone filing a tax return using your Social Security number. Identity monitoring checks different data sources, but many services do not alert on misuse involving tax returns, public benefits, or Social Security benefits.

A breached organization, bank, credit card provider, employer benefit, or insurer may offer monitoring or recovery services for free; other services cost money. Before paying, check which bureaus and data sources are covered, how often they are checked, what triggers an alert, and whether recovery support or insurance is included. Insurance may cover some costs of reclaiming your identity, but generally does not reimburse money stolen by scammers. Check deductibles, exclusions, and overlap with homeowners or renters insurance. You can also review your free credit reports for activity on your credit files. The FTC explains the differences and limitations in its guide to identity-theft protection services.

How can you avoid follow-on scams?

Scammers may use real details from a breach to make an unsolicited call, email, or text seem legitimate. Do not give personal information to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Instead, reach the institution through a phone number or website you already know is genuine. The FTC’s phishing guidance explains how to recognize and report suspicious messages. If an account may have been accessed, check for unfamiliar sign-in notifications, changed contact details, and email-forwarding rules.
