A suspected Messenger leak does not by itself prove that anyone accessed your Facebook account. If you see signs of unauthorized account access, use Meta’s hacked-account recovery flow; if the concern is that someone else saw or shared a message, account-security steps cannot recall copies already received.
First, work out what may have happened
Look for signs that someone accessed your account without permission, such as unfamiliar account activity or security notices you did not trigger. That is different from learning that a recipient or another person has seen or shared a message.
The available information does not establish which specific Messenger incident the phrase “leak” refers to, whether there was a platform incident, or who may have been affected. Do not assume that a concern about message disclosure means your Facebook account was hacked.
If someone may have accessed your Facebook account
Meta’s Facebook Help Center advises: “If someone hacked your account, visit www.facebook.com/hacked on a device you’ve used to log into Facebook before.” Open facebook.com/hacked on a device you have previously used to log in and follow the recovery flow.

Be wary of unsolicited messages claiming to be support or asking for your password or login codes. Facebook’s account-security guidance covers login alerts, two-factor authentication, phishing, and malicious software.
Strengthen sign-in protection
Turn on two-factor authentication and review login alerts
After recovering access, review Facebook’s security settings, enable two-factor authentication, and check login alerts so you can be notified about sign-ins Facebook identifies as unfamiliar. Feature availability and setup details can vary by account and device; use Facebook’s current security settings and guidance.

Consider a compatible security key
Facebook supports adding a third-party Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) or FIDO2 security key as an account sign-in protection. Meta cautions: “Before purchasing, make sure that your security key is compatible with the browser and the device that you use to log into your account.” Check your device, browser, and the key’s connection method—such as USB or NFC—before choosing one. A key is an optional way to protect future sign-ins, not a way to undo disclosure of a message already seen or copied.
Before relying on any second factor, make sure you can securely retain the recovery options for your account in case you lose access to that factor. Meta’s cited guidance does not establish a ranking of key models or authentication methods.

Do not reset Messenger secure storage as a generic leak response
Resetting the security method for Messenger’s encrypted-chat secure storage is not a message-recall feature. Meta warns: “When you delete your secure storage, your encrypted chat history will be permanently deleted.” It also says Messenger cannot restore the backup for you. Do not delete secure storage merely because you suspect a leak; treat a reset as a data-loss action, not an account-recovery step.

Deleting your account does not remove copies of messages already delivered to other people. Meta says that messages sent to friends may remain visible to them after account deletion because copies are stored in their inboxes. Account deletion therefore cannot make a recipient forget, unsend, or lose a message they already received.
