To set up a smart bulb, check the exact model’s network and power requirements, install it, then add it through the manufacturer’s app. Some bulbs connect directly to Wi-Fi; others use Bluetooth, a hub, or a compatible smart-home controller. Follow the bulb’s own setup path rather than assuming every brand pairs the same way.

Before you start: check the bulb and network requirements

Read the bulb’s packaging or model-specific guide before installing it. Confirm the socket and fixture are compatible, which app to use, whether a hub or controller is needed, and which Wi-Fi band the bulb supports. For example, TP-Link’s Kasa bulb setup requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and power that stays on; WiZ also says its lights connect to a 2.4 GHz network. Those requirements are product-specific, not universal. TP-Link’s Kasa Wi-Fi setup guide (updated May 15, 2026) states: “Your smart bulb requires a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and an always-on power supply.”

Have the home Wi-Fi password ready, and keep the bulb within reliable range of the router during pairing. If the instructions require the phone and bulb to use a particular network, make sure the phone is connected to it before opening the app.

Set up the bulb with its manufacturer’s app

  1. Install the bulb. Fit it into a compatible socket and switch on the fixture, following the product’s instructions.
  2. Connect your phone to the required network. Use the band and network specified for the bulb. For the cited Kasa and WiZ instructions, that is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
  3. Open the correct app and add the device. Choose the app’s add-device or setup option, select the bulb or light type if prompted, and follow the on-screen steps. The app may request Bluetooth access or ask you to connect the phone temporarily to a network broadcast by the bulb.
  4. Complete pairing and test control. Enter the Wi-Fi password when requested, wait for setup to finish, then try switching the bulb on and off in the app. Assign a room or name if offered.
  5. Link a voice assistant separately if you want one. Use the relevant ecosystem’s linking process only after the bulb is working in its own app, and only if the bulb supports that assistant.

The prompts vary by product. For instance, TP-Link says some iOS users may need to open the phone’s Wi-Fi settings and join the temporary TP-LINK_Smart Bulb network, then return to the Kasa app. That instruction applies to the documented Kasa setup, not every smart bulb. TP-Link’s Kasa instructions and WiZ’s light setup guide describe their respective flows.

Choose the right connection path for your smart bulb

“Smart bulb” does not mean one connection method. Check the exact model’s documentation to see which path it supports.

Direct Wi-Fi setup

Some bulbs join the home Wi-Fi network directly. Add them through their manufacturer’s app and meet the model’s requirements for Wi-Fi band, phone connection, and power. Do not apply another brand’s band or pairing instructions without checking.

Philips Hue with a Bridge or Bluetooth

Philips Hue documents setup through a Hue Bridge already added to the Hue app, or through Bluetooth without a Bridge. Which option is available depends on the product. See Philips Hue’s bulb and lamp setup instructions.

Direct Matter setup for eligible Hue lights

Hue also documents direct setup through Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa for Matter-enabled Hue lights. This route requires a compatible Matter controller and a Thread border router. If the bulb was previously connected to a Hue Bridge, Hue says to remove it from that Bridge before pairing it directly through Matter. Confirm that your exact bulb and smart-home setup meet these requirements before choosing this path. Philips Hue’s setup guide lists the available routes.

If the bulb will not connect

Start with basic checks before changing router settings or resetting the bulb. Work through these in order:

  • Check power. Make sure the fixture is on and the bulb is fully installed. For the cited Kasa setup, the bulb needs an always-on power supply; switching off its wall switch removes power and can interrupt app control.
  • Check the connection path and Wi-Fi band. Verify whether the model joins Wi-Fi directly or uses a Bridge, Bluetooth, or Matter setup. Confirm the band required by its instructions.
  • Check the phone’s network and password. Make sure the phone is on the home network specified in the app flow and that the Wi-Fi password is correct. If the app requests a temporary bulb network, follow that model’s instructions and return to the app afterward.
  • Check signal strength. Move the bulb or phone closer to the router for setup if the signal is weak.

For a Kasa bulb that still will not connect, TP-Link’s Kasa setup troubleshooting guide discusses router checks including WPA2+AES security, Wi-Fi channel and channel width, and temporarily disabling or separating a 5 GHz network. These are manufacturer suggestions for documented Kasa connection failures, not universal settings. Change router settings only when the bulb and router manufacturers support the change, and restore any temporary setting afterward if it is not needed. Consult the bulb maker’s troubleshooting instructions before a factory reset, since resetting can erase pairing and configuration.

What to check when choosing a bulb

Before buying, compare the exact model’s requirements against your home and preferred smart-home setup:

  • Connection method: direct Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, hub, or controller.
  • Network needs: supported Wi-Fi band and any temporary setup-network requirement.
  • Physical fit: socket and fixture compatibility.
  • Ecosystem support: required app and supported smart-home protocols or assistants.
  • Power control: whether the wall switch must stay on for app control.

Verify each detail in the model listing and manual. Setup requirements can differ even among products in the same broad category.
