Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf someone may be in cardiac arrest in the UK, call 999 immediately. The ambulance call handler can guide CPR and tell you where the nearest registered public defibrillator (AED) is, including how to access it if a cabinet is locked. For advance planning, use DefibFinder to see AED locations registered on The Circuit—but a map listing does not guarantee a device is reachable right now.
In an emergency, call 999 before searching a map
- Call 999 as soon as someone collapses and may be in cardiac arrest. Put the phone on speaker if possible.
- Follow the call handler’s instructions for CPR. Ask another person to retrieve an AED when the handler directs you.
- Ask the handler where the nearest registered rescue-ready public AED is and how to reach it. They can provide access details, such as a cabinet code where relevant.
- When the AED arrives, follow its spoken or visual prompts as well as the dispatcher’s directions.
Resuscitation Council UK says: “The ambulance call handler will guide you through how to perform CPR, and they will also tell you where your nearest defibrillator is.” Read its public guidance.
For planning, use DefibFinder
DefibFinder displays locations registered on The Circuit, the UK’s national defibrillator network. You can use it before an emergency to familiarise yourself with AED locations near home, work or places you visit. It is a planning map, not an emergency dispatch service; during a suspected cardiac arrest, call 999 rather than spending time searching independently.
Check whether a listed AED is practically accessible
A map pin tells you where a registered AED is listed, not whether you can reach it at the moment you need it. Some devices are inside buildings that close, and some cabinets are locked. Device details also depend on registration and updates, so a public listing is not a live guarantee that the AED is open, reachable or recently checked.

- Check whether the cabinet is locked and whether access instructions are provided.
- In an emergency, ask the 999 call handler to confirm the nearest usable registered device and give any relevant access directions or code.
- Look for AED signage or ask nearby staff if appropriate, but do not let that delay the emergency call or dispatcher instructions.
Which route should you use?
| Route | Best for | What it can tell you | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 999 ambulance call handler | An active suspected cardiac arrest | The nearest registered rescue-ready AED and access details, including a code where required | This is the UK emergency route; call immediately rather than searching independently. Resuscitation Council UK and The Circuit. |
| DefibFinder / The Circuit map | Familiarisation and planning before an incident | Registered AED locations and available location or access information | A map listing does not establish that the device is accessible or recently checked when needed. DefibFinder and The Circuit. |
You do not need AED training to use one
Public access AEDs are designed for use by members of the public. They give spoken or visual instructions, analyze the person’s heart rhythm, and advise or deliver a shock only when indicated. Follow the prompts and keep following the call handler’s directions; lack of training should not stop you from using the device.
Outside the UK
The directions above are UK-specific: they refer to 999, The Circuit and DefibFinder. Elsewhere, call the local emergency number and follow the dispatcher’s directions; use the local authoritative AED registry if you are checking locations in advance. The UK sources cited here do not establish which locator or access process applies in other countries.
