Before depositing, check who operates the venue and whether it is available to you, read the exact contract and settlement rules, calculate fees and likely exit costs, verify liquidity and withdrawal terms, and decide how much you can afford to lose. A market price is a changing estimate formed by trading—not a guaranteed probability, payout, or return.
1. Verify the venue and the protections that apply
Start with the legal entity behind the service, not its brand name or marketing. Identify whether it acts as an exchange, broker or intermediary, or another type of service; then check the relevant official registration and disciplinary-history resources for that entity. Confirm that the venue serves your location and account type under its current rules.
Make sure you are using the authentic website or app. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recommends registered entities and warns that customers may have little or no protection when dealing with unregistered entities operating outside the United States. It also recommends verifying official app links. A claim that a platform is “regulated” is not enough on its own: verify the entity, jurisdiction, and protections that apply to your account in the CFTC’s guidance on prediction markets and event contracts and its Learn & Protect resources.
2. Read the full contract and settlement rules
A market title or short description may leave out conditions that determine whether a contract pays. Open the specific market’s full rules before ordering. The CFTC says customers are entitled to transparent information about contract terms, including the payout, trading rules, and how and by whom settlement decisions are made.

- Event and deadline: What precisely must happen, and by what date, time, and time zone?
- Evidence: Which source, data release, or official announcement determines the outcome?
- Decision and process: Who decides the result, and how is settlement carried out?
- Edge cases: What do the rules say about revised data, delays, cancellations, ties, or ambiguous outcomes?
- Payment: What does each side pay or receive, and do conditions or deductions apply?
If you cannot tell from the written rules what would make the contract settle each way, do not treat the market label as a substitute for clarity.
3. Calculate the cost to enter and exit
Read the current official fee schedule and any notice specific to the contract. Account for costs on both entry and exit, including commissions, transaction fees, and other disclosed charges. Then look at the best available bid and ask and the quantity available at those prices: the displayed quote is not necessarily the price you will get for the order you want to place. The CFTC advises customers to understand fees and other costs and how they affect returns.

A price such as 60 cents is a market price shaped by participants’ views and market conditions. It does not establish that the event has an objective 60% chance of occurring, and it does not guarantee your profit or final payout.
4. Check liquidity, exits, and access to your funds
Some open positions can be traded out before settlement, but only at a price available in the market at that time. Prices can move, and a thin order book—or no buyer at a price you consider acceptable—can make an exit costly or unavailable when you want it. Check the available depth against the size of the order you have in mind, rather than assuming you can close at the displayed price.

Separately, verify the account’s deposit and withdrawal methods, charges, identity-verification requirements, processing details, restrictions, and withdrawal procedure. Funding an account and closing a position are different from withdrawing money, so check the relevant terms for both. The CFTC says customers should have access to their funds and describes the possibility of trading out at the current market price; neither point guarantees a particular execution price or processing time.
For Kalshi specifically, its Help Center provides sections on deposits, withdrawals, verification, fees, orders, and market rules. Those materials are specific to Kalshi, and its help center warns that members risk losing the cost of a transaction, including fees. Consult its current underlying articles and fee schedule for details; do not assume its methods or terms apply to another venue.

5. Review integrity, account security, and support
Look for rules addressing manipulation, trading by people who can influence an outcome, and use of material nonpublic information. Also check how to report a concern, what account-authentication controls are available, and how to reach customer support.
In a February 25, 2026 advisory, the CFTC Division of Enforcement described Kalshi cases involving a trader who traded on his own candidacy and an individual with likely advance knowledge of YouTube content. The advisory also discussed the CFTC’s authority over illegal trading practices on designated contract markets and exchanges’ audit-trail and surveillance duties. These are specific enforcement matters, not a measure of typical losses or evidence that every venue has identical controls. The practical check is whether the venue’s rules and safeguards are clear—and to avoid trading where you have prohibited influence or confidential information. Read the CFTC Enforcement Division’s prediction-markets advisory.

6. Set a loss limit before you fund an account
Decide in advance the maximum you are willing to deposit and lose. Use only money left after living expenses and savings needs; do not raise the limit because of a promotion, pressure, or earlier losses. The CFTC puts it plainly: “Only trade with risk capital, or money you can afford to risk after living expenses and other savings needs have been met.” Its Learn & Protect page also cautions that “There is no such thing as a risk-free trade or investment.”
Compare venues using the same checks
If you are weighing more than one service, compare the same details in current official materials rather than relying on an old comparison or a marketing summary.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Operator and oversight | Legal entity, role, relevant registration, jurisdiction, and protections for your account. |
| Eligibility | Geographic availability and account requirements that apply to you. |
| Contract rules | Event definition, settlement source and decision maker, deadlines, edge cases, and payout. |
| Trading costs | Current fees, bid/ask spread, and order-book depth for the intended order. |
| Exits and withdrawals | Whether the market is liquid enough to exit, plus deposit and withdrawal methods, charges, restrictions, and procedures. |
| Account and market integrity | Authentication, support and complaint routes, surveillance, and rules on manipulation or confidential information. |
| Risk controls | Whether you can set a firm personal limit and avoid funding with money needed elsewhere. |
Registration, availability, fees, payment routes, withdrawal procedures, contract terms, and dispute processes depend on the venue and jurisdiction and can change. Check the current rules for the particular service and market you are considering before making a decision.
