For a new Kodi-based TV media center, buy the Raspberry Pi 5. It has a current LibreELEC image, hardware 4Kp60 HEVC decoding and more processing headroom than the Pi 4. Choose a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B instead if you already own one or want a lower-cost local-playback build: it can also hardware-decode 4K HEVC. Avoid buying a Pi 3 or earlier specifically for modern 4K playback.

Which Raspberry Pi is the best fit?

Board Best fit What to know
Raspberry Pi 5 A new Kodi media-center build, especially for current 4K use Hardware HEVC decoding and 4Kp60 HDMI output; LibreELEC reports smoother navigation through large libraries than on Pi 4, based on the project team’s observation rather than an independent benchmark.
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B An existing board or a cost-conscious local Kodi player Hardware HEVC decoding up to 4Kp60. LibreELEC supports 4K50/60 modes, but configuration may be needed.
Pi 3 or earlier Basic or legacy media-center use In the documented newer LibreELEC releases, Pi 2/3 use software rather than hardware HEVC decoding, making them a poor new purchase for modern 4K playback.

LibreELEC’s download page lists version 12.2 with Kodi 21.3 images for Pi 5, Pi 4, Pi 400, CM4, Pi 3 and Pi 2. Select the image designated for your exact board when installing. Check the current LibreELEC downloads.

Why Pi 5 is the default new-build choice

Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, a VideoCore VII GPU, a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, and dual 4Kp60 HDMI output with HDR support. It also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, a microSD slot and USB-C power input. These specifications provide useful headroom for a Kodi interface and current 4K HEVC playback; they do not guarantee that every file or display setup will work at its highest settings. See Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.

Pi 5 does not have an H.264 hardware decoder. LibreELEC says its faster CPU can software-decode 1080p H.264, but that is the project’s assessment, not a guarantee for every file, bitrate or configuration. If your library is mainly H.264, account for that distinction rather than assuming every codec is hardware-decoded. Read LibreELEC’s Pi 5 codec notes.

When Pi 4 is enough

Pi 4 Model B remains a practical choice for local Kodi playback, including 4K HEVC: its official datasheet lists hardware H.265 decoding up to 4Kp60. The main reason to prefer Pi 5 for a new purchase is its newer processing hardware and simpler 4K60 output setup, not that Pi 4 cannot decode 4K HEVC. View the Raspberry Pi 4 datasheet.

If you already own a Pi 4, it is reasonable to try it before buying a replacement. For a new build where the price difference matters, compare the complete setup cost—including a suitable supply, storage, cooling and any case—not just the board.

What 4K60 actually requires

4K60 is an end-to-end capability, not a Pi-only setting. The board, TV or receiver input, input settings, media format and cable all affect whether a 4K60 signal works. LibreELEC says Pi 5 outputs 4K60 by default, while Pi 4 may need configuration to enable 4K50/60 modes. LibreELEC also notes that Pi 4 and Pi 5 do not support 4K60 4:2:0 output. A certified 4K60-capable cable may be needed for the chain. See LibreELEC’s 4K/HDR guidance.

Do not treat 4K60 as a requirement for every media center. Many video files use 4K at lower refresh rates. Check the formats you actually watch and the capabilities of the TV or receiver input you plan to use.

What you need to set up a Pi 5 media center

Power supply

Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply for Pi 5. A 5V/3A supply limits the current available to USB peripherals, which can matter if you attach a drive or other bus-powered accessory. Use a supply that meets the board’s needs rather than assuming an older Pi 4 adapter will be adequate. Check Raspberry Pi’s power-supply guidance.

Boot storage

You need boot media; a microSD card is a common choice. Raspberry Pi’s recommendations of at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS or 16 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite are specific to those operating-system installations, not stated LibreELEC minimums. Check LibreELEC’s installation instructions for the storage requirements that apply to its image. Read Raspberry Pi’s SD-card guidance.

Case and cooling

Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 works best with active cooling under general use; its Pi 5 case integrates a fan. Pi 5 does not fit the Pi 4 case, so choose a case made for Pi 5. A passive option is also available: LibreELEC names the FLIRC Kodi Edition case, but check current availability and board compatibility before buying. Review Pi 5 case and cooling details.

Network and media storage

Pi 5 supports Wi-Fi and gigabit Ethernet. You can keep media on a network share or connect USB storage; if you use a powered USB drive, the power supply’s peripheral-current limit is relevant. Choose wired or wireless networking based on the location of the Pi and the reliability of your home network.

Is a Raspberry Pi a good choice for Netflix or other subscription apps?

Not necessarily. A Kodi-capable Pi is not automatically equivalent to a certified commercial streaming device. LibreELEC release notes describe using Widevine DRM for protected add-ons such as Prime Video and Netflix, and explain that the move to aarch64 on Pi 4/5 can require replacing older DRM libraries. That documents a technical route and a maintenance issue; it does not establish reliable current playback, resolution or provider approval for every service. If a particular subscription app is essential, confirm that provider’s current supported-device list before buying. Read LibreELEC’s Widevine release notes.

How to choose and install

  1. Pick the board: choose Pi 5 for a new build, Pi 4 if you already own one or need a lower-cost local Kodi player, and an older board only for basic or legacy use.
  2. Confirm the software image: open the LibreELEC download page and select the image matching your exact Pi model. The page lists LibreELEC 12.2 / Kodi 21.3 for the supported models noted above; versions and image availability can change.
  3. Gather compatible essentials: prepare boot storage, an appropriate power supply and a case that fits the board. For Pi 5, use the recommended 5V/5A USB-C supply and plan for active cooling.
  4. Check the video chain: connect to a TV or receiver input that supports the resolution and refresh rate you want, enable any required input setting, and use a cable rated for the signal.
  5. Verify the app requirement: if you depend on a specific streaming service rather than local Kodi playback, verify its supported devices before committing to the Pi.
