Clean a Nespresso Vertuo POP+ by running its water-only cleaning rinse; descale it separately when the machine gives its descaling alert. The rinse takes up to seven minutes, while descaling takes about 20 minutes and uses one unit of Nespresso descaling liquid mixed with 0.5 L (17 fl oz) of water. The button-and-lever sequence below is specific to the POP+.
Cleaning and descaling are different jobs
The routine cleaning cycle rinses the machine’s internal coffee path with water. Descaling is a separate maintenance process for which the POP+ uses Nespresso descaling liquid and then a fresh-water rinse. Follow the POP+ manual for the machine’s controls rather than instructions for another Vertuo model. Nespresso’s general maintenance guidance also distinguishes cleaning from descaling.
Run the routine cleaning rinse
Set aside an empty container that holds at least 1 L (34 fl oz). The POP+ rinse can take up to seven minutes; after you start it, it begins within two minutes and stops automatically when complete. You can stop the cleaning cycle by pressing the button. Follow the steps in the official Vertuo Pop+ manual.
- Rinse the water tank and lid, fill the tank with fresh drinking water, and put it back on the machine.
- Rinse the cup support. Open the head and eject any used capsule. Empty and rinse the capsule container and drip tray.
- Remove the cup support and place the empty 1 L (34 fl oz) or larger container under the coffee outlet.
- Close and lock the head. Check that no capsule is inside.
- Wait until the light is steady. Press the button three times within two seconds. Let the rinse run to completion.
- Wash the capsule container, cup support, and drip tray with hot water and mild, odorless detergent. Wipe the outlet with a clean damp cloth. Use a soft cloth on the machine, and dry visible water inside the head with a clean, dry cloth.
If coffee grounds appear in the cup, Nespresso support recommends running the cleaning procedure twice. Nespresso’s Vertuo Pop assistance page provides that guidance.

Descale when the POP+ gives its alert
Descaling takes about 20 minutes and cannot be interrupted. The manual specifies one unit of Nespresso descaling liquid mixed with 0.5 L (17 fl oz) of water, plus an empty container with a capacity of at least 1 L (34 fl oz). Do not substitute a household cleaner or an unverified descaler: the manual specifies Nespresso liquid, and Nespresso support warns that other products may damage the machine. The solution can be harmful; avoid contact with eyes, skin, and surfaces. Check the POP+ manual for the exact controls.
- When the descaling alert appears, unlock and open the head, eject any used capsule, empty the capsule container and drip tray, and replace them.
- Mix one unit of Nespresso descaling liquid into 0.5 L (17 fl oz) of water in the tank. Handle the solution carefully.
- Remove the cup support and put the empty 1 L (34 fl oz) or larger container under the outlet. With the machine on, close the head but leave the lever unlocked.
- Hold the button for at least seven seconds, or until the light turns off. When the button blinks orange rapidly, you have 45 seconds to continue.
- Lock the head, unlock it again, then hold the button for about seven seconds or until the light turns off. Lock the head again. Rapid orange blinking indicates descaling mode.
- Press the button once to start the descaling phase. Wait for it to stop automatically.
- Rinse the tank and drip tray thoroughly. Fill the tank with fresh drinking water, empty the container under the outlet, and put it back. Press the button to start the fresh-water rinse; the machine stops automatically when it is done.
- Wash the capsule container, cup support, and drip tray with hot water and mild, odorless detergent. Dry them with a clean towel, dry visible water inside the head with a clean, dry cloth, and let the machine dry for 10 minutes before using it.
The POP+ manual says the machine can enter descaling mode only after 30 or more coffees have been brewed. If the sequence does not work before then, that minimum is a possible explanation.
