First identify where the payment failed: adding a card to Wallet, authenticating on your device, tapping at a terminal, or getting the issuer to approve a purchase. Each stage has a different fix. Apple says all Apple Pay transactions are routed to the card issuer for approval; if a purchase is declined, contact the bank or card issuer for the reason.
Start by identifying what failed
Was the card never added to Wallet, or is it already there and a particular purchase was declined? Those are separate problems. If the card is already in Wallet, note whether your iPhone accepted the authentication and whether the reader showed a response. That tells you whether to check device setup, ask the merchant about acceptance, or contact the issuer.
| Failure stage | What to check | Who can help |
|---|---|---|
| Card enrollment | Issuer support, device and region eligibility, software, authentication setup, Apple Account two-factor authentication, and connectivity | Check the device and Wallet setup; contact the issuer for card-specific enrollment errors |
| Device authentication | Whether Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode completes the payment step | Check device authentication and payment flow |
| Terminal acceptance | Whether the merchant accepts Apple Pay, your card, and its payment network; whether the phone is presented correctly | Ask the merchant what its terminal accepts |
| Issuer authorization | Whether the bank or card issuer approved the transaction | Contact the bank or card issuer |
If you cannot add your card to Apple Wallet
Card enrollment depends on more than the iPhone. Apple advises checking that the issuer supports Apple Pay for the card, that your device and country or region are supported, and that the device has the latest compatible system software. Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, or a passcode must be set up as applicable, and Apple Account two-factor authentication must be enabled. A network connection and Apple service availability can also affect setup. See Apple’s steps for adding a card to Apple Wallet.
If Wallet shows “Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “Card Device Limit,” Apple directs you to contact the issuer. Apple does not approve or decline cards for Apple Pay, so Apple Support cannot override an issuer’s card decision.

If a purchase with a Wallet card is declined
Contact the card issuer. Apple’s guidance is direct: “All Apple Pay transactions are routed to card issuers for approval.” The issuer makes the authorization decision and can explain why it declined a specific transaction; Apple does not provide that issuer-specific reason.
Successful Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode authentication does not guarantee approval. Authentication confirms your intent and identity on the device. The payment network and issuer also use transaction security data to verify the payment, and the issuer may decline under its own rules. Apple describes this flow in its Apple Pay security overview.

If the terminal does not accept the tap
A contactless reader must support the full combination: Apple Pay, your card, and that card’s payment network. A merchant may accept Apple Pay generally but not a particular card or network. Ask the merchant what its terminal accepts if the reader rejects or does not respond to your payment.
- Select the card you intend to use, if it is not already selected.
- Authenticate with the method prompted on your iPhone.
- Hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader.
- Wait for “Done” or a checkmark before moving the phone away.
Apple’s iPhone purchase instructions describe this contactless flow. If the phone completes the interaction but the purchase is declined, treat it as an authorization question for the issuer rather than assuming the terminal is faulty.

Choose the next step by symptom
- Wallet will not add the card: Check eligibility, device settings, software, and connection; contact the issuer for the listed card errors.
- The phone will not authenticate or complete the contactless interaction: Check the authentication prompt, select the intended card, and follow the tap flow.
- The terminal says the payment method is unsupported or does not respond: Ask the merchant whether its reader accepts Apple Pay, your card, and its network.
- The payment reaches the transaction stage but is declined: Ask your bank or card issuer for the transaction-specific reason.
A replacement iPhone, NFC accessory, or terminal accessory is not a general fix for card enrollment errors or issuer declines. A physical card may be an alternative way to pay, but it does not resolve the Apple Pay issue.
