ORNL says it crossed the exascale barrier in May 2022. Its scale combines thousands of CPU-and-accelerator nodes with a purpose-built network and facility; its role is to help researchers tackle scientific problems that demand enormous computing capacity.
What is the Frontier supercomputer?
Frontier is a national-laboratory research system housed at ORNL’s OLCF—not a workstation or a computer available for ordinary retail purchase. ORNL describes it as an HPE Cray EX system that came online in May 2022 as the world’s first exascale machine. That is a historical milestone, not a statement about its current ranking or operational status.
Frontier also belongs to a continuing Oak Ridge leadership-computing program. ORNL’s history names Jaguar, Titan, and Summit among its predecessor systems. The sequence shows the lab’s sustained investment in large-scale research computing, but the available information does not provide a like-for-like technical comparison of those machines.
What does exascale mean?
Exascale means a computing scale of at least one quintillion calculations per second (1018). ORNL reports that Frontier crossed this threshold in May 2022. As Bronson Messer, director of science for OLCF, put it, “Frontier marks the start of the exascale era for scientific computing.”

The term describes a performance scale, not a promise that every program running on Frontier will execute at that rate. OLCF’s user guide lists approximately 2 exaflops of theoretical peak double-precision performance. Theoretical peak is a system specification; results for an individual application depend on its workload, software, and how effectively it uses the machine.
How is Frontier built?
The OLCF user guide describes a system of 77 cabinets and 9,856 AMD compute nodes. Each node combines a CPU, memory, and four accelerators. The table summarizes the guide’s listed configuration; its technical pages are undated.

The accelerator count refers to Frontier’s specialized data-center components, not consumer graphics cards. The CPU and accelerators work together within nodes, while the Slingshot interconnect links the system so large jobs can use many nodes.
What is Frontier used for?
ORNL describes Frontier as supporting research that can require large simulations, data analysis, or artificial intelligence workloads. Published examples span several fields:

These are examples of applications and collaborations, not guarantees that a particular result came from Frontier alone. Feiyi Wang, an ORNL computer scientist who leads research into AI and analytics, described the milestone this way: “The exascale number marks a major milestone itself, but it also marks the beginning of a new chapter in high-speed computing.”
Why did building Frontier take more than installing hardware?
A system of this scale depends on coordinated infrastructure, system integration, hardware, and software. ORNL’s account of the project describes a multi-year national-laboratory effort. Frontier project director Justin Whitt noted a challenge common to ambitious supercomputer builds: “A major challenge in building supercomputers in general is that when you begin many of the technologies that you need, they don’t exist yet.” The point is that delivering a machine at this scale involves bringing technologies and facility capabilities together, not simply assembling off-the-shelf parts.

What Frontier’s numbers do—and do not—tell you
The node count, accelerator arrangement, and theoretical peak indicate the system’s designed scale. They do not establish how fast a specific application will run, how Frontier compares with another system on a particular benchmark, or where it ranks today. A meaningful comparison needs a defined measure and date—for example, results from the same benchmark edition, or an explicit comparison of theoretical peak with theoretical peak.
ORNL documented Frontier’s exascale milestone in 2022. The sources cited here do not establish its current operational status or latest ranking, so claims that it is the world’s fastest supercomputer today should be checked against a current, authoritative ranking rather than inferred from its launch milestone.

How researchers use a national-laboratory system
Frontier is part of OLCF’s research-computing environment, not a retail system that individuals can simply order. Current access, allocation, and application rules are not established here; researchers interested in using it should consult OLCF’s current application guidance for eligibility and process.
