The key questions are who creates an advantage, who draws defenders away from the paint, who cuts or screens without the ball, and what each player can do when the first option is stopped. Fit is about how skills work together—not simply how talented a player is on their own.
Start with what the offense asks players to do
Labels such as “pace and space” can be too broad to judge fit. Identify the team’s main initiators and recurring actions: pick-and-roll, handoffs, post passing, isolation, or motion. Also look at how often players cut or screen away from the ball and which shots the offense tries to create. Spacing and execution are part of a system, not just a formation on a tactics board; the NBA’s discussion of spacing connects those ideas to team style.
Identify what the player reliably creates
Separate offense a player creates from points they score after someone else creates an opening. Can the player beat a set defender, force help, shoot when left open, finish at the rim, pass out of pressure, set a useful screen, or attack a closeout? A team may need one missing function more than another high-scoring player with overlapping responsibilities.
This is a practical way to reason about fit, not an official NBA scoring rubric. It is consistent with research that treats lineups as interactions among skills and player archetypes rather than as a simple sum of individual grades. Judge spacing and off-ball value together
Spacing is functional: a credible shooter can make a defender stay farther from the paint, giving a driver or cutter more room. But three-point percentage alone does not capture what a player does when the ball is elsewhere. A player can contribute through well-timed cuts, screens, quick passes, or an interior scoring threat. The NBA’s explanation of five-out spacing includes cuts as part of how teams use space, while its Ja Morant film study shows how defenders can crowd the paint when teammates do not space the floor.
Map roles beside the team’s primary players
For the likely lineups, assign the jobs: primary ball-handler, secondary creator, spacer, cutter, screener, roll or pop threat, post hub, and transition finisher. Then check whether the player adds a needed job, duplicates one a teammate already does, or has a way to contribute without waiting for the ball.

A passing hub needs options around them
NBA.com’s film study of Domantas Sabonis as an offensive hub describes how perimeter players around him can activate his passing and playmaking. The lesson is complementarity: a hub needs teammates who can convert the openings they help create. It does not mean every non-shooting center requires four perimeter players, nor does the historical example describe a current Indiana lineup.
One player’s positioning can open a driving lane
In a Bucks film study of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez, Lopez’s spacing occupies Steven Adams while Giannis rolls down the middle. The fit mechanism is that one player’s position can affect a help defender’s choices and make another player’s action more dangerous. This historical example is not a claim about Milwaukee’s current roster.

Check whether the fit survives different lineups
A player’s value can change with teammates and scheme. Ask whether the player can contribute beside the team’s best players, whether the offense can use their strengths in more than one combination, and whether a role change makes those strengths easier or harder to access. NBA.com’s historical analysis of Russell Westbrook’s move to Washington compared that environment with Houston’s different approach. It illustrates how context can change fit; it does not establish how he would fit a present-day roster.
Use film and statistics as complementary evidence
Film can show the mechanism: a defender staying attached to a shooter, a cut timed to a drive, or a screen that occupies a helper. Play-type, shooting, and lineup data can help test whether that mechanism appears repeatedly. When available and based on adequate samples, compare performance with and without the player and examine role-specific production and lineup combinations. Academic work also analyzes lineups through distinct dimensions such as player roles and shooting styles; it is a research method, not a league-endorsed fit rating. Do not treat a five-player net rating as proof that one player caused the result. It reflects all five players, their opponents, and the minutes in which the lineup played; substitutions, health, and role also matter. A spacing cost may not appear in an individual box score. Use lineup outcomes as one clue alongside the film and the player’s responsibilities, not as a clean verdict on an individual. A lineup-data explainer discusses these attribution limits.

| Question | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Creation | Can the player start an advantage, or do they mainly finish one? |
| Spacing | Does the player’s shot threat draw a defender away from the action? Look for evidence beyond percentage alone. |
| Off-ball contribution | Can the player cut, screen, relocate, or make quick connective passes? |
| Role complementarity | Does the player add a needed function or duplicate a teammate’s creation job? |
| Lineup flexibility | Can the player function in different combinations, including beside the team’s best players? |
| Evidence quality | Do film and adequate lineup samples support the conclusion, or does it rest on a small, opponent-dependent split? |
These are practical comparison dimensions, not a formal NBA standard. The most useful answer is specific: this player fits this role, beside these teammates, because these actions let their skills contribute.
