Deadlock looks and feels different from Dota 2 because it presents combat as a third-person shooter, while Dota 2 is framed by Valve as a multiplayer action RTS. That changes the moment-to-moment view of a fight, but not the broader idea that heroes, abilities, and team objectives drive play. Deadlock is also still in early development, so its current details may change.

What does Deadlock’s shooter presentation change?
Deadlock’s third-person shooter presentation puts the combat encounter in a different visual and player-facing frame from Dota 2’s action-RTS presentation. That is the clearest supported distinction: how a fight is presented and experienced, rather than proof that Deadlock has left MOBA-style team strategy behind.

The available official description does not establish precise aiming mechanics, control behavior, or a complete set of combat rules. It is more accurate to describe Deadlock broadly as a shooter-presented game than to assume specific input systems or mechanics.
How much of Dota 2’s strategy layer is different?
Dota 2’s official materials emphasize heroes and abilities alongside the strategic map: lanes, routes, neutral camps, structures, and hero talents all appear in Valve’s descriptions. Those examples show why calling Dota 2 an action RTS does not reduce it to real-time combat alone. Planning around heroes and the map remains central to its identity.

These sources establish a useful contrast in emphasis, not a complete feature-by-feature rules comparison. Valve’s Dota 2 gameplay page is a historical update, so it should not be treated as a definitive current reference for every system or match rule. Dota 2 – 7.00 – New Gameplay
Why should you treat Deadlock’s current details as provisional?
Valve labels Deadlock as early development and says it includes temporary art and experimental gameplay. That makes its present roster, map, balance, and match rules subject to change rather than settled specifications. Access is currently limited to friend invites through playtesters; Valve’s Steam listing gives the release date as “To be announced.” Deadlock on Steam

A September 29, 2026 Valve announcement, “City Never Sleeps,” describes a major visual update to the map and neutral units, six new heroes, and HUD updates. It is evidence that the game’s content and presentation continue to evolve, not a declaration that its design is final. Valve’s “City Never Sleeps” announcement

If you want Valve’s shooter-presented take on team-based, hero-centered play, Deadlock is the relevant comparison—but access is limited and its design remains experimental. If you prefer the established action-RTS framing in which hero abilities and strategic map play are foregrounded, Dota 2 fits that description; Valve says Dota 2 is free to play. Dota 2
