The league has described scheduled media access and mental-health and performance support; research on basketball attention offers only limited, indirect clues about focus and does not test reporters, social media, or public scrutiny.
Media access is structured, not simply something players can switch off
Media contact is governed by league and team arrangements, so players’ exposure is not entirely unbounded. For the 2022–23 season, the NBA described credential tiers, required press-conference availability, and a postgame cooling-off period. Under that season’s Tier 1 locker-room access policy, media could enter 30 minutes before games, and players had a 20-minute postgame cooling-off period before access. These are details of the NBA’s 2022–23 policy announcement, not confirmation of the rules in force today.
Availability can also be a formal obligation. In December 2020, the NBA announced that Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets were each fined $25,000 after repeated missed team media availabilities that week. The case shows that media duties can have consequences; it does not reveal how Irving, the Nets, or other players manage attention during games.
What support does the NBA describe for mental performance?
The NBA presents mental health, wellness, and performance as related parts of its Mind Health work. In a 2024 NBA.com interview, Mind Health director Dr. Kensa Gunter called it “the league’s mental health, wellness and performance program.” She also said every team was required to have a designated licensed health provider and psychiatrist, while many teams employed mental-performance consultants. Those supports serve different needs: clinical care and wellness are not interchangeable with performance coaching, and the interview does not specify what every player receives individually.

Gunter described the program’s ambition as making mental health “an essential element of excellence, both on and off the court.” Her comments appear in the NBA’s May 2024 interview. They establish the league’s stated approach, not proof that each player uses a particular technique or has a specific provider.
Mindfulness is one documented example—not a league-wide habit
In 2019, the NBA and WNBA announced a partnership with Headspace that included a “Performance Mindset” category. The announcement grouped content around four pillars—focus, confidence, resilience, and managing pressure—and described player interviews about meditation and its place in their games and lives. It listed 16 curated meditation courses at the time.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
This is evidence that a league-supported mindfulness resource existed, not that all players meditate, that the content remains available in the same form, or that meditation is the best method for every athlete. The historical details are in the 2019 NBA-WNBA-Headspace announcement.
What basketball attention research can—and cannot—tell us
A systematic review published online in 2026 examined fatigue and attentional focus in basketball. It included five studies with 89 male players across different ages and levels, and reported preliminary evidence that fatigue can affect attention and some performance outcomes. The review noted methodological limitations and found no eligible studies of female athletes.

That evidence is narrow: it concerns fatigue and attention, not media exposure. It does not establish how often media distractions affect NBA players, measure their performance impact, or identify a proven routine for tuning out reporters, online commentary, or public scrutiny. The review is available from Frontiers in Psychology.

Players may use personal habits, coaching, or professional support to prepare and regain focus, but the available evidence here does not establish one method as standard. A player discussing meditation or pressure is describing an individual experience, not issuing a universal instruction. Likewise, league policies explain when media access happens; they do not show how a player feels about that access or handles it internally.

Historical reporting also points to the broader demands surrounding professional sports. An NBA.com report in 2018 described athletes facing ongoing pressures on their money, attention, and time, alongside mental-wellness initiatives developed by the league and players’ union. Former player Keyon Dooling said, “We’re trained to just shut up and play. We’re trained to not process and talk about our emotions, how we feel.” His comment speaks to emotional expectations in the sport, not to a specific in-game focus technique. See the 2018 NBA.com report.
The clearest supported answer is therefore about systems rather than a secret trick: media availability is organized by policy, and the NBA describes mental-health and performance resources that may help players manage the demands around competition. Individual approaches vary, and no source here proves which habits NBA players use to block out media distractions.
