Teams commonly create one for each branch or pull request so reviewers and testers can inspect a change at a shareable URL. In this article, “ephemeral environment” means a temporary application deployment—not a Kubernetes ephemeral container, which is a separate troubleshooting feature.
What are ephemeral environments?
An ephemeral environment is an isolated, temporary place to run an application or service. It is provisioned for a specific purpose, such as reviewing a proposed change or running integration tests, and then stopped or deleted. GitLab describes dynamic environments as deployments commonly created by a CI/CD pipeline for one deployment and later stopped or removed: GitLab CI/CD environments.
A preview environment is a familiar example: a developer pushes a branch, automation deploys it, and the resulting URL lets teammates examine the change without setting it up on their own machines. GitLab calls these preview deployments review apps.
How do ephemeral environments work?
- A developer pushes a branch or opens a pull or merge request.
- A CI/CD pipeline builds the change and provisions an environment for it. The deployment may receive a URL linked from the review request.
- Reviewers, QA staff, or automated tests use the running deployment to validate the change.
- When the review request closes, the work ends, or an expiry policy takes effect, automation stops or deletes the environment and its associated resources.
Separate environments can help teams review changes without competing for one shared development deployment. They can also expose integration behavior that is difficult to reproduce locally. They are most useful when the value of shared, production-like validation justifies the time and resources needed to provision them.

How do I create a preview environment for every pull request?
The general pattern is to connect pull-request or branch events to your CI/CD platform, deploy each change to a distinct environment, and publish its URL for reviewers. Exact configuration depends on the hosting platform and deployment architecture; avoid assuming a single setup works across repositories.
- Choose what triggers a deployment. Common triggers are a branch push or a newly opened or updated pull request or merge request.
- Define the deployment target. Decide how each change gets its own address and whether it needs separate application resources, data, or supporting services.
- Configure the pipeline. Add build and deployment jobs that create or update the environment for that change. GitLab documents dynamic environment configuration in its CI/CD environments guide.
- Make the deployment discoverable. Attach the preview URL to the review request or otherwise make it easy for reviewers and tests to find.
- Define removal behavior before enabling creation. Specify what closes an environment, how long it may remain active, and how dependent cloud resources are removed.
For GitHub Actions, environment protection rules can require a job to satisfy specified conditions before it accesses environment secrets. Availability depends on the repository’s visibility and plan, so check the current requirements for the target repository in GitHub’s deployment environments documentation.
How do ephemeral environments work in Kubernetes?
A full ephemeral application environment can be deployed on Kubernetes, but it is not the same thing as a Kubernetes ephemeral container. An environment may comprise an application deployment plus whatever services and configuration that change needs; Kubernetes is one possible platform for running those resources.

Kubernetes ephemeral containers are temporary containers added to an existing Pod for troubleshooting. The Kubernetes documentation states, “You use ephemeral containers to inspect services rather than to build applications.” The feature has been stable since Kubernetes v1.25. It does not, by itself, create or manage a preview environment.
Kubernetes also has ephemeral volumes, a storage feature with its own lifecycle and security considerations. Their lifecycle does not amount to a complete policy for creating and deleting an application’s environment. Teams using generic ephemeral volumes can consider admission controls to reject them when that fits their security model.
How do I clean up preview environments automatically?
Design cleanup alongside provisioning. Decide which event removes a preview—such as closing or deleting its branch or review request—and set an expiry policy for environments that are abandoned. Include the supporting cloud resources in that policy, not only the application deployment.

GitLab supports the auto_stop_in setting for dynamic environments. Its documentation notes that a background worker checks for expired environments periodically, so an environment may not stop at the exact configured minute. Teams should account for that delay when choosing an expiry period and monitoring resources: GitLab CI/CD environments.
- Identify every resource created for a preview, including dependent services and storage.
- Connect teardown to the appropriate branch, request, or test lifecycle events.
- Set expiry behavior for previews that receive no normal close event.
- Check that removal handles failures and does not leave billable resources behind.
- Keep access to cleanup jobs reliable even when the original deployment job or branch is gone.
Security and access controls for preview deployments
Preview jobs should receive only the secrets and permissions they need. GitLab warns that CI/CD variables may be available to jobs by default and documents environment-scoped variables as a way to restrict which jobs can access sensitive values. Review the variable scope and job access in the GitLab environments documentation.

Where appropriate, require deployment approvals or other protections before a job can access environment secrets. GitHub environment protection rules provide one mechanism, but feature availability varies by repository visibility and plan; consult GitHub’s documentation for the target repository.

Also consider isolation from production. A preview should not gain production credentials or unrestricted access to production data merely because it uses production-like infrastructure. Select environment boundaries, data, and access rules according to what the change needs to validate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do ephemeral environments reduce cloud costs?
They can reduce costs when temporary environments replace always-running lower-level infrastructure and are reliably shut down. An AWS cloud-native guide recommends treating lower-level environments as ephemeral as a cost-reduction approach: AWS: Ephemeral environments.
Savings are not guaranteed or universal. They depend on the resources provisioned, how long each deployment runs, how many environments run at once, and whether cleanup actually removes the associated infrastructure. The same factors can make a per-branch setup more expensive than a shared environment if many large previews run concurrently or remain active after their work is complete. No fixed savings percentage follows from the recommendation.

When should a team use preview environments?
Use them when reviewers need a shared, realistic place to inspect a change, or when integration behavior is important to validate outside a developer’s local setup. They are less compelling when a fast local workflow already answers the question and the deployment adds substantial delay or operational overhead. GitLab’s engineering handbook notes that production-like validation can be slower than local development because production environments lack tools such as hot reloading: GitLab engineering principles.
Before choosing a design, compare the trade-offs that matter to your team:
- Isolation: Whether changes are separated from one another and from production.
- Environment fidelity: Whether the dependencies and integrations needed for validation are represented.
- Feedback speed: How long provisioning takes compared with the value of a shared deployment.
- Lifecycle: Whether normal closure and expiry both trigger reliable cleanup, including dependent resources.
- Security: How secrets, permissions, and any deployment protections are scoped.
- Cost: The effect of resource size, runtime, and concurrent previews.
- Platform fit: Whether your CI/CD platform supports the workflow under your repository and plan constraints.
These criteria can guide a choice between a shared preview system and isolated per-branch deployments; no one architecture is best for every team.
