Move the student away from immediate danger if you can do so safely. Call 911 or your local emergency number for a life-threatening or potentially serious injury, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. If a head, neck, or back injury is possible, avoid unnecessary movement. Once care is underway, preserve the facts and records; questions about school responsibility, insurance, or legal rights depend on the circumstances and local rules.
What to do first: safety, emergency help, and care
Get out of immediate danger
If the scene is still unsafe, prioritize getting the student to safety—but do not move them in a way that could worsen an injury. Do not return to a dangerous area to collect belongings or evidence.
Call emergency services for serious warning signs
Call 911 or your local emergency number for an unresponsive student, breathing problems, severe bleeding, a serious head injury, or a suspected head, neck, or spinal injury. MedlinePlus identifies loss of consciousness, confusion, seizure, repeated vomiting, severe headache or stiff neck, unequal pupils, and inability to move a limb as serious head-injury signs: MedlinePlus: Head injury.
A head injury may worsen or symptoms may appear later, so a student who initially seems well is not necessarily in the clear. If you are uncertain and symptoms could be serious, seek prompt professional guidance rather than waiting for every warning sign to appear. Emergency dispatchers and clinicians—not a checklist—should guide urgent care.

Limit movement and give only first aid you can provide safely
If a head, neck, or back injury is possible, leave the student in the position found unless moving is necessary for immediate safety, CPR, or bleeding control. Follow instructions from emergency professionals.
For severe external bleeding, call emergency services and apply firm, direct pressure with a dressing if it is safe to do so. If blood soaks through, place another layer on top rather than removing the first; do not remove an object embedded in a wound. See the American Red Cross guidance on bleeding.

Arrange appropriate medical follow-up
For symptoms that are uncertain, worsening, or not obviously an emergency, contact a clinician or local nurse line for guidance. Follow the treating professional’s advice about evaluation and follow-up; a parent should not try to diagnose a concussion or an internal injury at home. Keep visit summaries, discharge instructions, prescriptions, and receipts.
Document the incident after care is underway
Make a record while memories are fresh, without delaying safety or treatment. Write down the timeline, location, what the student recalls, what witnesses observed, and any changes in symptoms. Preserve original photos and videos, noting when and by whom they were taken; avoid editing the only copy.

- Photograph visible injuries when appropriate. The ACLU’s protest guidance recommends photographing injuries and gathering witness information when someone believes their rights were violated.
- Keep medical records and communications from the school, event organizers, or police.
Do not put the student or yourself at risk to obtain evidence. Documentation comes after safety and care.
If police questioned, detained, or arrested the student
Stay calm and do not argue or physically resist. General ACLU guidance for police encounters at school advises asking whether the student is free to leave and considering a request for a lawyer, parent, or guardian before questioning. It also recommends medical care for an injured student, photographing injuries, and writing down what happened afterward. See ACLU of North Carolina: What to do if police stop you at school.

That guidance concerns school encounters and is not a complete statement of protest-arrest law. Applicable procedures can depend on the student’s age, jurisdiction, and whether the encounter was at school, on public property, or at a private institution. If the student is detained, arrested, cited, or asked to provide a statement, contact a qualified local attorney promptly. Do not assume a specific outcome or ignore a court or police instruction.

The ACLU’s national guidance says public-school students retain speech rights, while consequences related to attendance or protest conduct can depend on time, place, manner, school rules, and local law. Its general discussion distinguishes political viewpoint from attendance and school-functioning issues; it does not settle a particular student’s case. The ACLU quotes the Supreme Court’s student-speech principle as: “students do not lose their constitutional rights ‘at the schoolhouse gate.’” See ACLU: Students’ Rights.

That principle does not determine whether a school is responsible for a specific injury. If discipline or a potential claim is involved, get advice from a local attorney familiar with the relevant law and policies.
Check insurance and responsibility case by case
Do not assume a school, event policy, or health insurer will cover a particular injury. Coverage may turn on policy language, network rules, location, and the facts. Contact the health plan and care provider directly while prioritizing needed treatment. School responsibility likewise depends on the incident, supervision, location, policies, jurisdiction, and other facts; preserve records and seek individualized legal advice if a claim may be involved.
