You can reduce the risks of using an AI agent with text messages by giving it access only to what a task needs, setting a narrow instruction, and personally checking every message or other consequential action before it happens. A text, link, attachment, or page the agent reads may contain instructions designed to mislead it, so treat message content as untrusted—not as permission to change your request. These steps reduce risk but cannot guarantee safety.
How can a text message manipulate an AI agent?
Prompt injection is an attempt to mislead an AI by placing malicious instructions in content it processes. Apple describes instructions hidden in extra context as “indirect prompt injection”; in a messaging scenario, that context could be a text, link, attachment, calendar item, or retrieved web page. The content might try to change what the agent does or who receives a message. OpenAI and Apple both describe this as a security challenge, not a risk that can be eliminated simply by asking an agent to be careful.
Apple’s developer guidance distinguishes two possible outcomes: data poisoning, where an attacker influences a parameter such as the recipient, and action poisoning, where the attacker changes the action itself. The danger is greater when an agent can see private information, process untrusted content, and send messages or make other changes. Treat incoming content as material to analyze, not as authority to override your instructions.
How to set up a safer, bounded task
Limit access to what the task requires
Before starting, check which messaging accounts, apps, and other data the agent can access, and disconnect anything the task does not need. OpenAI recommends limiting an agent’s access to the data required for its task. For ChatGPT agent, OpenAI also advises enabling only the apps needed, managing app permissions, and stopping a task if something seems suspicious. Controls differ by service, so consult the current settings and help pages for the agent you use.

State what the agent may and may not do
Ask for one clearly defined result rather than giving a broad mandate. For example: Summarize this conversation only. Do not open links, message anyone, or share information. Ask me before taking any action.
This makes the intended boundaries explicit; it is not a technical safeguard and does not guarantee the agent will resist malicious content. OpenAI warns that broad instructions such as asking an agent to review messages and take whatever action is needed can make it easier for malicious content to mislead the agent.
Keep credentials and sensitive details out of prompts
Do not type passwords, authentication codes, or sensitive personal information into an agent prompt. If the task involves a private conversation or sensitive account, consider whether the agent needs access at all. OpenAI advises against entering passwords or private information directly in messages to ChatGPT agent.

What to check before an agent sends or changes anything
A confirmation screen is a chance to inspect the action, not a reason to approve it automatically. Before confirming, check:
- The action: Is the agent doing exactly what you asked, or has it added an unrequested step?
- The recipient: Is the destination the person or account you intended? Malicious context may try to redirect a message.
- The message: Read the complete text, including any links or attachments, rather than relying on a summary.
- The information shared: Check whether the message includes personal, account, or other private details you did not mean to disclose.
OpenAI recommends reviewing the details before confirming consequential actions, such as sending an email or completing a purchase. Apple’s guidance describes how hostile context could change a recipient or action. If anything is unexpected, do not approve it; stop the task and review the agent’s access and instructions.

What happens to messages you send to an AI feature?
Privacy depends on the specific service and feature. Do not assume that protections for ordinary person-to-person messages also apply when you deliberately send content to an AI.
WhatsApp and Meta AI
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default. It separately says Meta AI is optional and user-initiated: “Meta AI is only ‘on’ when you choose to message it, and only you or a group participant can initiate this, not Meta or WhatsApp.” When you choose to chat with Meta AI, Meta receives what you or others send to it. Check the current feature-specific information before sharing sensitive content; the privacy statements apply to WhatsApp and should not be generalized to other messaging services. ChatGPT agent
OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent help page says chats, browsing history, and associated screenshots remain in conversation history until deleted, and describes deletion and model-improvement controls. It states that business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used to train models by default; Plus and Pro data follows the stated privacy policy and the user’s settings. These disclosures are specific to ChatGPT agent and the account context described. Check the current documentation and your account settings because controls and policies can change. Do not rely on an agent’s fluent wording or a sender’s claim to be an authority—or to use advanced AI—as proof that a message is genuine. The CFTC warns that suspicious messages arrive over SMS and messaging apps, including investment lures promising extraordinary returns and messages impersonating authorities. For an urgent account or government message, independently find the organization’s official website or customer-service channel. Do not use a link or phone number supplied in the suspicious message.

For unknown senders, the CFTC advises not responding. Use the app’s available blocking and reporting tools, review its privacy settings, and consider device or carrier spam filters. See the CFTC’s guidance on AI-related scams.
