For a DIY security camera, edge AI means that at least some detection or analysis runs on the camera itself or nearby local hardware instead of a remote server. That can avoid sending video to the cloud for that particular task—but it does not mean the camera is fully offline, stores everything locally, or sends no data elsewhere. To judge privacy, check processing, storage, remote access, subscriptions, and offline behavior separately.
Edge AI, cloud AI, and on-premises processing
The labels describe where analysis happens, not the camera’s complete privacy behavior.
- Edge AI: detection or inference runs on the camera. Wyze describes its Edge AI features as built into supported devices and says, “With Edge AI*, all of the ‘smarts’ live on the device.” Its support page currently lists Wyze Cam v3 Pro, Wyze Cam v4, Wyze Cam Floodlight v2, and Wyze Floodlight Pro; check the page for current availability and terms. Wyze’s explanation of Wyze AI and Edge AI
- Cloud AI: relevant data is sent to remote servers for analysis. Wyze says its Person and Pet Detection features using Wyze AI send device data to cloud and remote servers for processing before returning the result. Its page says cloud AI requires a subscription and is available across most of its camera range; confirm the current feature and subscription terms on that page.
- On-premises processing: analysis runs on local equipment, such as a network video recorder (NVR) or AI appliance, rather than in each camera or a remote cloud. Ubiquiti describes footage and AI analytics processed and stored on-site, and says most UniFi functions can operate without mandatory cloud services. Those are vendor descriptions of its system; exact capabilities depend on the deployment and components. Ubiquiti Trust Center
These terms can describe one part of a system without describing the rest. A camera may analyze motion locally while offering cloud storage or remote access through an account.
What edge processing does—and does not—mean for privacy
Local detection may mean raw video does not need to leave the home for that detection. It does not establish where all footage, event clips, metadata, account information, or alerts go. For example, eufy’s privacy notice describes EdgeAICore processing video, sensor data, and identified-person feature databases stored on the device, while its policy also describes cloud-storage subscriptions and other authorized processing or sharing. The policy says requirements can depend on location, applicable law, and configuration. eufy privacy notice · eufy privacy policy

Do not infer offline operation, encryption design, retention periods, or third-party access rules from the phrase “edge AI.” Those details need to be checked for the specific camera, service, and settings. Vendor descriptions are not independent audits of network behavior.
Six questions to ask before choosing a DIY camera
- Where does detection run? Check whether person, pet, vehicle, or other recognition happens on the camera, on a local recorder, or on remote servers. A product may offer different locations for different features.
- Where are continuous footage and event clips stored? Look for specific options such as a microSD card, NAS, local NVR, or cloud plan. Local analysis and local storage are separate capabilities.
- What leaves the camera or home network? Review the privacy notice and product documentation for alerts, remote viewing, account services, and any optional processing or sharing.
- Which features require a subscription or cloud service? Verify the current terms for the precise model and feature; a basic live view may not have the same requirements as AI detection, clip history, or cloud recording.
- What still works without internet? Check whether recording, detection, local playback, and notifications continue during an outage. Do not assume that local inference means all camera functions work offline.
- What does a physical privacy control disable? A shutter or shield can provide a visible way to block the lens, but its presence does not explain network data flows or whether microphones and other functions are disabled.
How product examples illustrate the trade-offs
These vendor-listed examples are not a controlled comparison. They show why edge AI alone is too narrow a basis for choosing a camera.

How to assess a privacy claim
- Start with the exact model and region. Feature sets and product availability can differ across models and markets.
- Match each feature to a data destination. Check where detection runs, where clips are stored, and what services support remote access or alerts.
- Read the current support page and privacy notice. Look for model eligibility, subscription requirements, authorized processing, and configuration-dependent terms.
- Check the controls you will actually use. Confirm card or NAS compatibility, internet-outage behavior, and what a physical shutter disables.
- Choose based on the whole setup. A local NVR or AI appliance can be relevant when you want processing and recording on premises, but confirm that it supports the cameras and features you need.
