Not always. A local AI camera may analyze video and record locally without an active internet connection, but offline operation depends on the camera, hub or recorder, storage, power, and setup. Local AI, local recording, and remote access are separate capabilities: a system can keep recording while its app, alerts, and remote viewing stop working.
What “local AI” does—and does not—mean
Local AI means that at least some video analysis happens on the camera or another device on your home network, rather than being sent to a cloud service for that processing. It does not, by itself, tell you whether video is saved locally, whether the camera keeps recording through an internet outage, or whether you can view footage remotely.
For example, Aegis AI’s documentation says that its built-in and downloaded local models run offline after initial setup. The same documentation identifies model downloads, cloud AI providers, messaging alerts, and software-update checks as internet-dependent. That describes Aegis’s configuration, not every camera system.
What can stop working when the internet goes out?
An internet outage is different from a power outage or a failure of the local Wi-Fi network. A camera and hub that remain powered may continue processing or recording on the local network, while functions that require an internet connection become unavailable. If the camera loses power, it cannot keep operating unless it has a suitable backup power source.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Remote viewing and app control: You may be unable to reach a live stream or change settings through the app. Wyze says users of its Cam v2 and Pan cannot view the live stream or change settings in the app while offline; cloud alert videos and motion or sound detection features also do not work in that situation. See Wyze’s Cam v2/Pan guidance.
- Push or messaging alerts: Alerts routed through a cloud service or messaging channel may stop even if the camera still detects activity locally.
- Cloud features: Cloud AI, cloud video storage, and other services that need a vendor’s servers will not be available without the required connection.
- Updates and downloads: Initial setup, model downloads, and software updates may require internet access, even if local processing works afterward.
Will the camera keep recording offline?
Only if the specific camera or system supports local recording and is configured for it. Check whether it records continuously or only on events, where recordings are stored, and whether the recording schedule must be set before the outage.
Camera with a microSD card
Wyze says scheduled microSD recording can continue offline on compatible models when the camera has power and the schedule was created while online. The support page lists which Wyze models qualify and identifies models that cannot record offline, including two doorbell models without local storage. A card alone does not make an unsupported camera record offline. Check the current model list and instructions in Wyze’s offline-use guidance.

Card compatibility is model-specific. For its older Cam v2 and Pan, Wyze documents a maximum of 32 GB for FAT32 cards and 256 GB for exFAT cards; do not apply those limits to other cameras. A compatible card can provide local storage, but it does not restore app access, cloud alerts, or other internet-dependent features.
Hub or recorder with local storage
Some systems record to a hub or network video recorder (NVR) rather than to a card inside each camera. Ubiquiti says UniFi Protect recordings are stored on a local UniFi OS Console and describes AI detection, recognition, and enhanced processing on the local network. It identifies G4, G5, and AI Series cameras as performing specified AI functions on-device. Remote access is separate and uses a secure connection between the client and console. Details are in Ubiquiti’s UniFi Protect documentation.

Arlo describes another arrangement: compatible cameras can save automatically triggered recordings to attached USB or microSD storage through a compatible SmartHub or Base Station when the camera and hub remain powered but the internet is down. Arlo says manual recordings are saved only to the cloud, so they do not have the same offline behavior. Check the hub, camera, and storage requirements in Arlo’s local-storage instructions.
TP-Link describes the Tapo H500 as a hub with built-in and expandable local storage, local AI processing, and support for compatible devices. Compatibility and offline playback depend on the devices and configuration; see TP-Link’s Tapo H500 product information.

Can you watch local footage during an outage?
Not necessarily. A camera may save clips to a card or hub while the internet is down, but the usual phone app may rely on a connection that is unavailable. Find out how footage is retrieved during an outage: through a local-network connection, direct access to the storage, or only after internet service returns. The answer can differ from whether recording itself continues.
UniFi Protect documents local recording on its console, but remote access uses a separate connection between the client and console. Arlo’s local-storage documentation describes recording to attached storage; confirm the supported playback method for your exact setup. For Wyze Cam v2 and Pan, Wyze says the app cannot show the live stream or change settings while offline.

How to check whether a camera will meet your needs
- Identify the exact camera and system. Look up the model number and any required hub or recorder. Offline behavior is not universal across a brand.
- Check where AI runs. Confirm whether the feature you care about runs on the camera or a local hub, and whether it needs a downloaded model or initial online setup.
- Verify local recording. Check whether the system supports a card, hub, or NVR; whether it records continuously or on events; and whether the schedule must be configured while online.
- Confirm storage limits and retention. Check supported card type and capacity, hub compatibility, and how much footage the storage can hold at your chosen settings.
- Find out how offline playback works. Verify whether you can retrieve clips during the outage and what device or local-network connection is required.
- List the features that need internet. Check remote viewing, app settings, alerts, cloud storage or AI, model downloads, and updates individually.
- Check power and network requirements. Local recording still depends on the camera and any required hub being powered. Determine whether the system also needs the home Wi-Fi network to remain available.
What storage estimates can—and can’t—tell you
TP-Link publishes estimated retention for a four-camera, 4MP scenario on the Tapo H500 page: its listed estimates range from 20 days of 24/7 recording with 1 TB to 323 days with 16 TB. TP-Link says those estimates use Tapo C410 prototype data and depend on compression, frame rate, and conditions. They are product-scoped estimates, not a general benchmark for other cameras or recording settings.
