A used PlayStation 4 may suit you better if its game library and the price and condition of a particular local listing fit your needs. There is no like-for-like price comparison here: compare actual listings, what they include, and their return terms before deciding.
Switch 2 or used PS4: what is the main difference?
The biggest difference is where and how you can play. Switch 2 is a hybrid console: play it handheld, set it up for tabletop play, or connect it to a TV with its dock. A PS4 is a home console that connects to a display; it is not a standalone handheld system.

That makes the choice fairly direct if portability matters. If you expect to play away from a TV, Switch 2 offers a mode the PS4 does not. If the console will stay in one place and you are choosing primarily around the games you want, compare the libraries you can actually access on each system.
How to compare the games you can play
Check your existing Switch games
Nintendo says, “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” The key word is compatible: Nintendo notes that some Switch games may be unsupported or only partly compatible. Before buying on the assumption that a particular game will work, check that title against Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information.

Check your PS4 discs and digital library
A PS4 supports physical game discs and digital downloads. Sony says disc games install from the disc, which must remain inserted to play. If you already own PS4 games digitally, check that the account and access you need are available; if you rely on discs, make sure the used console’s drive reads them. Sony’s PS4 setup guide covers the console setup and model families.
Neither platform is automatically the better choice for games. Write down the specific titles you want to play, identify which platform versions are available, and verify compatibility or access for those titles rather than relying on broad claims about either system’s library.
What Switch 2 hardware means for everyday use
Screen and play modes
Nintendo specifies a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz for Switch 2. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a direct comparative test against PS4. The console’s handheld and docked options may matter more to your decision than display figures if you mainly play on a TV.

Storage expansion
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, some of which is reserved for the system. For game storage expansion, Nintendo specifies compatible microSD Express cards. Ordinary microSD cards can be used only to copy Nintendo Switch screenshots and videos; they are not a substitute for a compatible card for expanding Switch 2 game storage. Check the card format and whether it is sold separately before budgeting for extra space. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications.

Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life, depending on the game and use conditions. This is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for a particular game or session. A PS4 has no equivalent built-in portable play mode, so consider whether you need to game without a TV and power setup.
Account for online multiplayer costs
Sony says most PS4 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, although some games are exceptions. Check the requirement for the specific game you intend to play and the current subscription terms for your region. Sony also says that from January 2026 PS4 titles will be added only intermittently to PlayStation Plus game lineups and catalog updates; do not assume a particular PS4 game will be included. Consult PlayStation Plus support and the PlayStation Plus service page for current details.

A used PS4 is not necessarily cheaper than a Switch 2 for every buyer. Used prices depend on the model, condition, seller, included accessories, and local market; Switch 2 pricing and bundle contents also vary by region. Compare current listings where you live, and account for any games, controller, cables, storage card, or subscription you would need to buy separately. No like-for-like price comparison is established here.

This is practical buying guidance, not a Sony certification or warranty. Ask the seller to:
- Identify the exact PS4 model and state what is included.
- Show the console powering on and, if you plan to use discs, demonstrate that it reads a game disc.
- Confirm whether a controller and the necessary cables are included.
- Explain the testing period, return terms, or other recourse if it does not work as described.
A model name alone does not establish the console’s condition or remaining lifespan. Evaluate the individual unit and the seller’s terms.
