Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Secure the email inbox you use to sign in to PlayStation Network (PSN) as carefully as your PSN account. Someone who gets into that inbox may be able to reset passwords for PSN and other services, see sensitive messages, or impersonate you. PlayStation calls email “the gateway to many of your online services.”
Secure the email account used for PSN
PlayStation does not control your email provider’s security settings. Sign in directly to your provider and use its account-security page; the exact menu names and available options vary.
- Replace any reused password. Choose a strong, unique password for the inbox. A password manager can help you create and keep track of unique credentials; PlayStation recommends using one.
- Turn on an additional sign-in factor. Enable the strongest practical option your provider supports. Options may include a passkey, security key, or a second verification step such as a code. Providers and devices do not all support the same methods. Google, for example, documents 2-Step Verification, passkeys, security keys, and backup codes.
- Set up recovery methods and save backup codes. Add recovery information, such as a phone number or alternate email, if available. Keep backup codes somewhere safe and accessible if you lose a device. Do not keep your only recovery route inside the inbox it is meant to help recover.
- Review signed-in devices and sessions. Sign out of devices you do not recognize or no longer own. Check recovery addresses, phone numbers, and connected sign-in methods too. Google provides a session review and sign-out workflow; users of other providers should look for equivalent controls in their account-security settings.
As an additional check, look for unfamiliar third-party access or mail-forwarding rules in your provider’s settings. Their locations and names differ by provider.
Protect the connected PlayStation account
After securing the inbox, strengthen PSN sign-in through PlayStation’s Account Management and account-security guidance. PlayStation recommends adding a passkey where supported. If you use 2-step verification (2SV), keep its backup codes available: PlayStation says it provides 10 one-use codes. Its guidance directs users without backup codes or phone access, or those facing verification prompts they cannot resolve, to the Online Assistant.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key NFC via USB-A and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Never share your PSN sign-in information with sites offering free currency or rewards, and do not scan account-related QR codes sent by strangers.
- Avoid signing in on shared or public devices. If you must use one, sign out when finished and do not save your credentials.
What to do if you suspect your email or PSN account was compromised
- Secure the inbox first. If PlayStation sends an account-change notice you did not expect, change the email account’s password. If you cannot, contact the email provider.
- Review access from a trusted device. Check the provider’s recent security activity and signed-in sessions, remove access you do not recognize, and update recovery information if needed. Google’s instructions show how Google users can review and sign out sessions; other providers have their own workflows.
- Start PlayStation recovery. Follow PlayStation’s account recovery guidance. Contact PlayStation Support if you cannot access the linked inbox or find that your sign-in ID or other account details were changed without permission.
- Check for unauthorized purchases. Review PlayStation transaction history and follow its current support guidance for charges you do not recognize. Refund eligibility is subject to PlayStation’s rules and limitations.
Sources and scope
PlayStation’s guidance describes the email inbox as a recovery gateway and recommends unique passwords, a password manager, passkeys, and caution around account-sharing scams. Google’s account-security documentation is an example of provider-specific options, not a universal email walkthrough. Menu labels, available sign-in factors, and recovery procedures may change.
