As of October 4, 2026, the next election listed by the Michigan Department of State is November 3, 2026. The state calendar lists September 24 as the date absentee ballots became available and October 24 through November 1 as the mandatory early voting period. Check Michigan.gov/Vote or contact your local clerk for current locations and hours before making a plan.
How the three voting methods compare
| Method | Where and when | How to vote and key deadline | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absentee (mail-in) ballot | Apply through your local clerk, receive a ballot, then vote at home or at the clerk’s office. | Apply online, by mail, or in person. Return the signed ballot by mail, secure drop box, or in person. A standard ballot must be received by the clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. | You want to vote at home or cannot get to an in-person site during its hours. |
| Early in-person voting | Vote at an assigned early voting site during the local early voting period. | For statewide and federal elections, the minimum period is nine consecutive days, ending the Sunday before Election Day. Mark your ballot at the site and insert it into a tabulator. | You want to vote in person before Election Day, including on a weekend. |
| Election Day in-person voting | Vote at your assigned polling place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. | Confirm your polling place and registration. Eligible voters who need to register or update an address must go to their local clerk’s office. | You prefer to vote on Election Day and can reach your assigned polling place during its hours. |
Local dates, hours, and locations vary by election and community. The state’s voter information site provides election details and helps voters find their assigned locations.

Application deadlines
- Online applications are due by 5 p.m. on the Friday before Election Day.
- A mailed application must be received by your local clerk by 5 p.m. on the Friday before Election Day.
- You may apply in person at the clerk’s office until 4 p.m. on the day before Election Day.
The state recommends applying at least 15 days before Election Day to leave time for the ballot to reach you and for you to return it.
Returning the ballot
Your signed standard absentee ballot must be received by the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. You can return it by mail, place it in a clerk’s secure drop box, or deliver it in person. Michigan encourages voters to mail ballots at least two weeks before Election Day; mailing close to the deadline risks the ballot arriving too late.
Military and overseas ballots follow a different rule: they must be postmarked by Election Day and received within six days after the election.
Tracking and ballot status
You can use Michigan’s voter information system to track absentee ballot application and mailing activity. If you hand your ballot in at an early voting site or on Election Day, the tracking page will not show it as received.

Early voting takes place at an assigned early voting site—not necessarily the closest site to your home. Some voters have more than one assigned site; others have only one. Check your assigned location, dates, and hours through Michigan.gov/Vote or your local clerk rather than assuming a nearby site will accept your ballot.
How long the early voting period lasts
For statewide and federal elections, Michigan requires at least nine consecutive days of early voting. The period starts on the second Saturday before Election Day and ends on the Sunday before it. Communities may offer up to 29 days in total, starting as early as the 29th day before the election. Starting in 2026, communities may also offer early voting on the Monday before Election Day. Early voting for local elections is at the local clerk’s discretion.
For the November 3, 2026 election, the state calendar lists the mandatory early voting period as October 24 through November 1. Local offerings and hours should be confirmed before you go.

What happens at an early voting site?
You check in, receive a ballot, mark it, and insert it directly into a tabulator. Ballots are stored in sealed containers and counted after polls close on Election Day.
Can I vote on Election Day if I’m not registered?
Michigan permits registration through Election Day, but registration and address updates must be handled at your local city or township clerk’s office. Within 14 days of an election, you must provide proof of residency. If you are eligible and in line at the clerk’s office by 8 p.m. on Election Day, you may register and cast an absentee ballot there.
Ordinary early voting sites do not offer voter registration unless the site is at a clerk’s or satellite office. For the November 3, 2026 election, the state calendar says new registrations must be made in person from October 20 through Election Day.
Voting at your polling place
Registered voters vote at their assigned polling place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Check the location in advance because polling places can change. Photo ID is not required to cast a ballot in Michigan: if you do not have an acceptable ID or forgot it, you may vote after signing an affidavit.
What if I change my mind after requesting an absentee ballot?
You can still vote in person if you requested an absentee ballot but have not returned it. Bring the unvoted ballot to an early voting site or polling place to surrender it and receive a ballot to complete there, subject to the applicable rules. A completed absentee ballot can also be brought to an early voting site or, except in Detroit, to the Election Day polling place for tabulation.

Some absentee ballots may be spoiled and replaced before method-specific deadlines. Once a ballot has been inserted into a tabulator, it cannot be changed. Because the available options depend on whether the ballot was returned and whether you need a replacement by mail or in person, contact your clerk promptly.
Accessibility and preparation
Michigan provides accessible absentee ballots for voters with print disabilities, voter assist terminals at early voting sites, and curbside voting at early voting sites by arrangement through the local clerk. Voters with disabilities may also vote in person at an early voting site or polling place. Ask your clerk about local arrangements and assistance.
Quick Recap
- Verify your registration and address.
- Look up your assigned early voting site or polling place, then check its dates and hours.
- Review a sample ballot before you go.
- If voting absentee, apply early enough to receive and return your ballot by the deadline.
- Bring photo ID if you have it, but Michigan does not require photo ID to cast a ballot.
