For most Android users, Google Play is the safer default: find the app, check its publisher and listing, then install it from the store. An APK installed from outside Play can be useful when an app is unavailable there, but you must verify that it really comes from the developer you trust. Play Protect can scan apps from outside Play, but it is not a guarantee that an app is harmless.
Google Play or an APK: which should you choose?
Google recommends installing apps from verified developers and warns that apps from unknown sources can put your device and personal information at risk. Google Play gives you a store listing and publisher information, and Play Protect checks apps before Play downloads them. Those checks are useful safeguards, not proof that every app is safe.

These are qualitative differences; Google’s cited guidance does not provide a head-to-head infection-rate comparison. An APK is not inherently safe because it is a particular file type, and a download site should not be treated as trustworthy without evidence.
How to install an app from Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for the app and open its listing. Check the app name, publisher, listing details, ratings, and reviews. These checks can help you spot a mismatch, but they do not certify an app as safe.
- Tap Install, or tap the displayed price if the app is paid, and follow any prompts on screen.
How to install an APK more safely
Sideloading means installing an app package from outside the Play Store. Consider it only when there is a clear reason, such as the app not being available through Play or the developer distributing it through an identified official channel.

- Start with the developer. Find the developer’s official website or a source the developer clearly identifies. Avoid links sent unexpectedly by someone claiming to represent a bank, delivery service, or tech-support provider; scammers may impersonate those organizations.
- Verify the app and publisher. Confirm that the developer identity and package match the app you intended to get. If you cannot establish that the source is official, do not install the APK.
- Keep Play Protect enabled. It can scan apps from outside Play and may warn, disable, or remove an app it considers harmful. A clean scan is not a guarantee of safety.
- Review the install warning. Pause rather than bypassing it reflexively. Confirm the source independently and consider whether the app and its requested access make sense.
- Use the on-screen permission flow only if you decide to proceed. Android may ask you to allow installs from the app or source handling the APK. The settings label and route vary by Android version and device, so follow the prompt shown on your phone rather than relying on a universal menu path.
- Plan how updates will arrive. Use the developer’s stated update method and verify it remains the official source; do not assume an old download link supplies the latest authentic version.
What Play Protect checks—and what it may share
Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and scans apps from other sources. If it considers an app harmful, it may warn you, disable the app, or remove it. Keep the feature on as a safety layer, not as a substitute for verifying the developer.
Google may ask to receive details about an unknown app for analysis. The setting called Improve harmful app detection permits Play Protect to automatically send unknown apps to Google. Consider that data-sharing implication when choosing whether to enable it.

Why Android may block an APK
Advanced Protection is enabled
Google’s Advanced Protection blocks most new installations from outside Google Play. Google lists Google Play, ADB, and preinstalled Android stores as exceptions. Existing non-Play apps are not removed by this restriction and continue to receive updates.
The developer is unverified in a covered location
As of October 4, 2026, Google’s help says that, beginning in September 2026, apps downloaded from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand must be registered by a verified developer to install and receive updates. The first covered stores named by Google are Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps.

The rule applies to certified Android devices running Android 8 and later. Google states exceptions for AOSP and non-certified devices, locations where Google Mobile Services are unsupported, and territories subject to applicable trade sanctions. Google says a global rollout across all install sources is planned for 2027; check Google’s current developer-verification guidance because locations and rollout status may change.
Google’s current instructions say users who choose to accept the risk can enable installs from unverified developers through Developer options. That process takes 24 hours, includes safeguards, and still leaves a warning at installation. Settings names and screens can vary. This is not a routine step to take just to get an app from an uncertain source.

Check Play Protect certification separately
Certification is about the Android device, not an individual app. In the Play Store, open profile → Settings → About → Play Protect certification. Certification means the device passed Android compatibility testing and is eligible to include licensed Google apps; it does not establish that every installed app is harmless. This check is especially relevant if the Play Store or Google apps are missing or device compatibility is in question.
