To win in Ninjala, build your score—not just your K.O. count. Start by defeating drones to increase S-Energy, spend it with the big-weapon threshold in mind, and choose fights where you can turn an attack or bind into an IPPON. These basics apply to the Nintendo Switch game; controls and balance can change with updates.

What wins a Ninjala match?

The player or team with the highest score when time runs out wins. An IPPON is worth more than a standard K.O., so scoring opportunities matter more than simply chasing eliminations. The official Ninjala Battles manual describes Battle Royale as a match for 4–8 players; Team Battle can use 4v4, 3v3, or 2v2 teams. The official how-to guide also frames both modes as score contests.

Prepare before your first match

Practice movement and attacks

Use Training Mode to try movement, aiming, and attacks against a computer-controlled character before entering a live match. Free Match is another lower-pressure option: unlike Ranked Match, it does not affect your rank. In Ranked Match, performance changes your rank. Mode availability and interface details may change with updates.

Set controls and know your weapon

From the control settings, begin with a preset layout and customize buttons if the default feels awkward; the manual says all buttons can be customized. In the base closet, check your equipped gum weapon and Shinobi Cards. Weapon types have different combo variations, Break Attacks, and Specials, so learn the weapon you actually have equipped rather than assuming every weapon uses the same approach. See the official controls manual.

Read the battle HUD

The HUD displays life, score and rank, Specials, Gum Shoots, Gum Ninjutsu, time, and points. Keep an eye on life and score while you move; checking the HUD helps you decide whether to build resources, pursue a target, or avoid a risky fight. The HUD and Training manual explains the indicators.

Use your opening to build S-Energy

Each match begins with 4 S-Energy units. Defeating drones increases your maximum capacity, and at 8 or more units you can craft a big weapon. The official Battles manual says a big weapon deals more damage, earns more score, unlocks a secondary ability, and automatically beats smaller weapons in a parry situation.

  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
  1. Find drones first. The official beginner flow recommends defeating drones to build S-Energy before focusing on combat.
  2. Watch your energy total. Gum Dash and S-Burst both use S-Energy, so spending it freely can delay reaching the 8-unit big-weapon threshold. Depleted energy recovers over time; scattered S-Energy pickups can speed recovery.
  3. Craft when the threshold is available. Reaching 8 units or more lets you make a big weapon. Its documented damage and score advantages make energy-building a useful opening priority, though nearby threats may require a different choice.

Move quickly without wasting energy

To Gum Dash, blow a Ninja-Gum bubble and press B while airborne. Gum Dash gives you a quick midair burst for repositioning or escaping, but it consumes S-Energy, so it is not unlimited travel. Use it when the burst can help you reach a target, avoid danger, or change position—not automatically every time it is available.

Use Ninja Sense to locate nearby opponents. Flame markers indicate their relative height: red means the same level, green means below, and yellow means above. Lock on with the R Stick; while locked on, click the L Stick to select another target. These cues can help you avoid searching blindly and choose an engagement.

  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go

  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

Gum Morphing disguises you as an object on the stage, and health recovery is faster while morphed. It can help you recover or lie low, while Gum Dash is the more immediate but energy-costing repositioning option.

Choose attacks using the priority cycle

Ninjala’s standard attacks are normal, back, and wide. Their priority works as a cycle:

When identical attacks clash, a parry state begins. Each player then chooses an attack type again; either player can spend S-Energy with L to escape the parry. Treat the cycle as a decision, not a guaranteed win from pressing one button: react to the clash rather than repeating a predictable choice. The right combo and special options also depend on your weapon.

Defend carefully: Gum Guard, S-Burst, and Break Attack

Blowing a bubble can activate Gum Guard against normal, back, and wide attacks. A Break Attack can overcome Gum Guard and S-Bursts. If a Break Attack hits Gum Guard, it causes Gum Bind; against an opponent in an S-Burst stance, it destroys their gum weapon.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

S-Burst requires at least 5 S-Energy. Since crafting a big weapon requires 8 or more, consider whether spending energy defensively is worth delaying that threshold. Gum Guard is not protection against every attack, so do not treat a bubble as a substitute for watching your opponent’s choices.

Turn openings into IPPON points

The manual lists three ways to earn an IPPON: defeat an opponent from a parry state, defeat an opponent while they are Gum Bound, or defeat one with Gum Ninjutsu. Each is worth more points than an ordinary K.O.

  • From a parry: Win the attack choice, then finish the opponent.
  • From Gum Bind: A successful Break Attack against Gum Guard causes Gum Bind, creating an opportunity to defeat the bound player.
  • With Gum Ninjutsu: The move becomes available when its gauge is full. Attacks and the passage of time gradually fill the gauge.

A practical first-match routine

  1. In Training Mode, get comfortable with aiming, Gum Dash, and your weapon’s attacks.
  2. At the match start, locate and defeat drones to raise your S-Energy capacity.
  3. Use Ninja Sense and the radar markers to find opponents and choose a fight you can finish.
  4. Keep the 8-unit big-weapon threshold in view before spending energy on Gum Dash or S-Burst.
  5. During a clash, choose normal, back, or wide based on the attack-priority cycle; use a Break Attack when an opponent relies on Gum Guard or S-Burst.
  6. Look for an IPPON finish through a parry, Gum Bind, or Gum Ninjutsu, and keep watching the score rather than chasing K.O.s for their own sake.

In Team Battle, coordinate with teammates: the result is based on team score. If you are still learning, practice in Training Mode or use Free Match before entering Ranked Match.
