Choose what happens to your old laptop based on its condition, whether it still has a useful role, and whether its data can be safely removed. Keep or upgrade a working machine, sell or donate one someone else can use, and recycle an unusable laptop through a suitable local program. Before any handoff, back up the files you want and sanitize the storage using instructions for your laptop and storage type.
Choose the right next step for your old laptop
There is no single best option for every old laptop. A working computer may remain useful to you or another person; a broken one may be a repair candidate or ready for recycling. Compare its condition and repairability, its likely usefulness to a recipient, your confidence in removing personal data, and the collection options available where you live.

For U.S. readers, local electronics collection rules and routes vary. Check your state or community resources, local solid waste office, household hazardous waste facility, or the laptop maker or retailer for current options. The EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as the two accredited U.S. electronics recycler certification standards; certification assesses environmental, worker-health, security, and downstream-handling practices. The EPA does not endorse individual services.
Back up your files and prepare the laptop
Before a sale, donation, trade-in, or recycling handoff, save the files you want to keep. Use an existing external drive or cloud storage if suitable; buying backup equipment is not required. Check that the backup contains the files you need before sanitizing the laptop, because removing data may be irreversible.

- Back up wanted files. Copy documents, photos, and other files you need to an existing drive or cloud service, then verify that you can access them.
- Sign out where appropriate. Sign out of accounts and remove the laptop from services or device lists where the service provides that option.
- Find instructions for the exact device. Consult the laptop manufacturer’s guidance for your model and storage configuration, along with the relevant operating-system instructions.
- Sanitize the storage before transfer. Choose a method appropriate to the storage device and the sensitivity of the information. Do not assume that an operating-system reset is sufficient for every laptop or storage type.
- Confirm the handoff is safe. Make sure personal information is no longer accessible before giving the device to another person or recycler.
NIST Special Publication 800-88 Revision 2, published in September 2025, defines media sanitization as a process that makes access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. Its guidance frames sanitization around information sensitivity and the effort an attacker might make. For highly sensitive information, consult a qualified data-sanitization provider and confirm the method and documentation before transfer. Older NIST Revision 1 material advised backing up first and consulting the manufacturer; Revision 2 supersedes it.

If the laptop cannot be reused or repaired economically, use an electronics collection route rather than placing it in household waste. Ask local authorities, a household hazardous waste facility, or the manufacturer or retailer about accepted devices and drop-off arrangements. Where available, look for an R2- or e-Stewards-certified recycler.

Do not put a lithium-ion battery—or a device containing one—in household garbage or recycling bins. The U.S. EPA gives that instruction on its Electronics Donation and Recycling page, last updated December 19, 2025. Follow local directions for battery collection, especially if the battery is removable.
Recycling also recovers materials and can reduce demand for newly extracted resources. The EPA reports a U.S. Geological Survey estimate from 2006: recycling one million laptops saves energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 U.S. homes in a year. This is a historical estimate, not a measure of the savings from recycling one individual laptop.
